The problem is there is no longer any barrier to entry any longer. When I first started making websites twenty-five years ago it was brutally complicated. It was very technical and required tons of patience. Now any thirteen year old can launch their own blog on Wordpress in half an hour - Hell, I taught my kid how to make her own blog when she was seven years old including FTP, uploading Wordpress itself, settings, themes....
Now any jackass can create a professional looking blog and pretend they are a legit news organization - and people believe it. The wilder the claims are the most clicks they get. This is what is fueling the division in this country, and it's ALL on the Republican side. We don't have Democratic sites making insane claims causing armed men to walk into Republican run pizza places to arrest criminals.
And people suck this shit up. My local city councilman posted a link a few months ago to a blog about the children being held in immigration and he said "I found this article to be correct, informative, and unbiased". If you look at the main page of the blog it was obvious it was completely biased. The article talked about how the Trump administration was only "enforcing the law" and they could not make changes without a vote in Congress. Well, turns out that was pure bullshit. People read this shit and believe all of it.
The first thing I do whenever I click on any news link is click out to the front page and see if they are biased or not.
