Nobody knows what Africa would look like without colonialism, but considering thousands of years of recorded history and Africa never building nothing more than a mud hut, never having a written language or domesticating animals, I wouldn't say we set them back at all. They would literally be running around with fig leafs on if whitey never hit the continent.
