The article states, "1 million people globally died from the 1968 flu pandemic — which lasted into 1969-70 — including 100,000 Americans."

1 million globally over three years, not 100 million. It came in several waves and acted just like seasonal influenza, killing primarily the very young and very old. Corona might kill about the same over time, but it's more unpredictable.
