You have to tin the tip to prevent it from oxidizing. To do this you need rosin core solder and there are 2 ways you can go about it.

1. Just wrap a layer of solder around the iron when it's cold and let it heat up.
2. Let the iron get hot and dab it with the solder.

The solder that usually comes with an iron is usually really poor quality. Personally, I like to make sure that I always use the highest quality solder for electrical work. So nothing less than steel based 60-40 mix with 1.5% rosin.
