I charge $150 to $200 for 500 words. Some people do think that's a big price, but plenty of others pay it. $18 is so cheap, I wouldn't expect to get 500 words of original idiomatic prose, well-written by a native speaker of English. Not a big enough price.

My clients are convinced (and my experience bears this out to an extent) that Google isn't as impressed by cheap word salad. I don't doubt there are places where anything with keywords that doesn't trigger a duplicate content will serve. But something that people take the time to read, and/or click links in, is needed for other SEO strategies. That can be hard to get for a penny a word.
