It might never replace 2D regular porn stuff, but it will continue to grow into a very big niche.
Virtual reality is firmly established now, it's not going to go away like 3D TVs did, and it will continue to get better.
The comment about neuroscience is pants. We're not far from lightfield 3D virtual reality, which is essentially identical to how the brain processes visual stimulation on the eye (i.e. light).
Facebook driving VR forward is a big thing. Although it's a bad thing from the point of view of privacy, it does mean that at some point in the next decade or so, having a VR headset will be as essential as having a social media account.
However, you're right that it's still hard to make money as an affiliate, especially if you were late to jump on board the bandwagon. I promote VR and have some of the best domain names, but I make a fraction of the money I was earning from 3D TV porn a decade ago, simply because there were about 4 or 5 other affiliates doing it back then. compared to hundreds trying to get lucky with VR porn today.
