Sounds like an email bomb - happened to me about a year ago.

I set up my email to send everything to spam folder except known contacts whom I whitelisted. Then, I reached out to the major newsletter services (such as mailchimp) and explained I was getting email bombed and had them block my email across their services. This resolved 99% of it.

Definitely an attack though, as the purpose is to inconvenience you and disrupt your work by burying legitimate emails in an avalanche of spam.
