I've noticed this as well. They tend to get very uncomfortable and defensive when you put facts in front of their faces that defy their beliefs and so they twist things around and call you names to defect from the main points.
The reason is because they are not arguing from an intellectual level but rather an emotional/religious one. It's why your point about them changing their minds only when the TV (religion) changes it's mind is true. Kind of like trying to tell ultra religious people that the world wasn't created in 6 days. They simply can't see any other truth but their own because if they did then their world would fall apart.
