did a bit more reading cuz killing time til my friends pick me up
so Peanut was killed because he bit someone involved in the kidnapping. if someone was trying to steal me from my home I'd bite them too
apparently there's no rabies vaxx available for squirrels, so a titre test (a test to prove an animal has enough rabies antibodies to be safe) wouldn't apply. I'm familiar with titre tests, my cats always needed one as part of the pre-travel vet visits when moving to new nations. those tests plus vaxx records proved they didn't have rabies without their heads needing to be chopped off
apparently there is no known case of squirrel to human transmission of rabies. simply put, not recognized as carriers
what I suspect mucked things up here was dude also had a raccoon, which are susceptible to rabies
I'm not excusing NY state, still epic bullshit. just the two unvaxxed animals, one of which is part of a species known for rabies, gave them the excuse
as a pet parent there is a high duty of care to protect the lil ones
I truly hope this doesn't sound like I'm blaming the dude. he's no doubt devastated and hindsight is 20/20
with 10 mins of reading NY state could have realized Peanut was no risk. so fuck them. just the living situation gave them the excuse
