People are paying for the convenience of not having to go out and do it themselves. It's especially useful for those who are disabled, too. I have friends in South-East Asia who never pick up food themselves, because delivery is so ubiquitous in the culture.
I think a lot of people undervalue their own time, and gas can be more expensive than most people factor (because it's a regular consumable.) Fast food is probably not the best value for delivery, but then again pizza was like the #1 delivered food before Door Dash existed.
This is unrelated to fast food delivery, but I did the math a few years ago, and I wasn't really saving that much money doing groceries myself because of the time and distance associated with the process. I have all of my groceries delivered now.
I've had to eliminate restaurant food from my budget, just because it's so expensive. Meals that were $10 are now $20 in-person!
