In the old days TV was 4:3, but theatrical movies were 16:9 for at least 20 years prior. We made and sold movies to both , that is why we shot 16:9 safe ( NOT because we were smart).....we have nothing in 4:3 since about 2005
now everything is in 16 :9 so I do NOT see the reason for cropping.
