Think about this - you'd rather die and get a thrill from jumping than just buring alive. That's NOT to say people were logically reasoning this out at the time - even the biggest wimp when it comes to heights (i.e. like me) would be fucking jumping once your ass is getting almost burned alive by the heat. People will do amazing things... not so different than you or me in the same scenario.
