this is absolutely NOT true. in 99% of cases when a band first signs, they get a shit contract that gives them 0 leverage, tiny compensation and a committement for 3-6 albums (and they are happy to get it), then if they "produce" and can sell albums, when the original contract is up, they have some ground to negotite terms and if not happy, can look elsewhere
