Bye-bye, physical media? Sony closes CD plant

So long 74 min, 600 meg CD's, you had quite a run!
Think I bought my first back in 83... replacing all those tapes was a tramatic experience.

http://news.cnet.com/8301-31001_3-20...?tag=cnetRiver

It's only a matter of time before the rest follow, CDR/W, even HD Disks imo. Data centers and mammoth hard disks, is that the future?

To paraphrase Mark Twain, the death of physical media has been greatly exagerated. I guess if you want to ingore the MILLIONS of people in the US that can't get internet or choose not to have it then go right ahead with the all digital download stuff.

I tried to buy a portable CD player the other day at Walgreens and they didn't have any. I couldn't believe it.

I mean, I have an ipod, but I also have a shit ton of CDs. While I understand that really I should convert all my cds to digital for a million reasons to be honest I just don't have time.

Cleaning out one of my file cabinets the other day, I came across a few 3.5" floppies. Realized I don't have a drive to read them anymore. Guess I'm hitting up Radio Shack.

I do still have a CD/DVD tray on a PC tower, though. Useful for...hm...I really have no idea what it's useful for anymore, TBH.

thats surprising to me. there is still a pretty big part of the population that buys CDs from stores as they don't have a way to connect their iPods to their cars.

IMO, i thought we would see a spike in CD sales when these teenie boppers turn 16 and get cars, but dont have an AUX or iPod input.

You're looking at a spike in the wrong product. FM transmitters and device to casette converters is where it's at

Personally, I don't understand why everything hasn't moved over to spiffy little SD type cards already. They're compact, virtually indestructible.... Oh wait, virtually indestructible? That's it...

Hehe back in 83 we didn't even know that something like CD's exists in my country. I bought CD player and some CD's to my mom this Xmas and she didn't know how to put it in the player, because she still played only her tapes from year 1980

I was reading once somewhere how someone started to issue songs or something else to audio tapes, and it made very good sales, because apparently there is still a lot of old people who never adapted to cd's.

Having hard copy back ups is really a good idea. Drives like the hard drive of a PC and of an external can fail and you lose the data. Unless you want to pay a company to try and recover it and that will cost you and then you may not get it all.

I just think they will be moving to only the larger disks for storage

I bought vinyl in December

Still seem to burn lots of CDs - 700mb is big enough for backing-up individual things.

Uhmmm... Did you read that article? The production is being transfered to another factory in a different state. You do know factories close all the time, right?

Walgreens is known for being a pharmacy, but it's also sort of a "corner store." You can buy most daily products there, including quite a bit of electronics.

under your ownership rights if you own the physical CD you can just go download off torrents what you already own in digital format saving your ripping time.

But seriously, all you have to do is set ITunes to Import CD's to your library when they are put in the cd-rom slot and you literally just have to feed it for about an hour or two while you watch a movie or something... easy squeezy.

LOL.

This is one fourth of my collection or so:

However, I stream Rhapsody all day long and can instantly call up nearly any song from Rhapsody, so I never ever bother with the CDs these days. No point in it.

We have a ten year old, and she still buys music on CDs. She's got an Itouch and is just getting into buying online.

I use Rhapsody all day long. I create custom radio channels so I hear a lot of different stuff. Occasionally I will hear a song that I really like and I want it, and it just so happens that Rhapsody will not have it for individual playback. So I go and buy the CD from Amazon, rip it when I get it.

I definitely notice a difference between my rips and the Rhapsody Stream. You pick up other sounds and in general it just sounds better. It's almost like listening to YouTube music and then listening to Rhapsody, noticeable difference.

Just the other day I ripped a new CD and the first thing I said was "wow this is way different."

Correct. For most listeners, it's no biggie. But for those with quality sound systems the difference is definitely noticeable.

And for those who seek to archive their music do better to rip in uncompressed WAV - file size will be about 10X larger than a MP3; these days ~40MB files are no big deal.

Also, for archival purposes, DVDs (writable CDs degrade pretty fast; DVDs are superior in both design and durability) are a better choice than SSDs / USB sticks, which have a rated retention time (google it; few people realize that SSDs lose data over time) of about 10 years tops, and some of the cheap higher density SSDs may retain data for only a few years.

I burn CD's all the time too. The iPod holds a million songs but it's easier to pop in a CD than to navigate to a playlist while driving.

that's crazy about the SSD.. is it a 'pay for what you get' type scenario?
