Libya Shoots down American Jet Fighter

The Libyans have shot down an F15 jet fighter, the americans are claiming it crashed but a study of the plane shows it was hit by a missile, probably a s300. Thankfully the crew seem to be ok and safe, but this is certainly a turning point and may explain why America just announced they are scaling back their flights....

The BBC are saying it was shot down....http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-12794589

I am not a military expert, but that sounds like a pretty crap missile if it hit a plane and didn't kill the occupants.

Actually how it works in modern jet fighters is that when the electronics on a jet fighter confirm that a missile will hit the plane, then the pilots are auto ejected from the plane to safety. Its not about killing the pilots, its just about destroying the plane. An F15 is a pretty old aircraft, so it will be an easy target for a s300, although it may have been a s200.

Ehm, it was already said the US would be stepping back and the UN partners taking a bigger part of the fight 2 days ago. They didn't "just" accounce the scaling back.

The pilot of the F-15E fighter jet was rescued by rebel soldiers after ejecting from the aircraft, it is understood.
Are they going to behead him?

Eh, the rebel soldiers are Khadaffi's opposition. Why would they behead one of their allies?

Yes but I think the question is when was the plane actually shot down? It may have been taken out then. Either way, if Libya is actually armed with the s300 that changes the whole game. I would not be surprised if the whole no-fly zone suddenly gets cancelled real fast.

Nah, they are saying that: "He reports seeing the jet plummet to the ground around 0900 (0700 GMT), but said it was unclear exactly what brought the plane down."

Anyone who thinks the US is going to take a back seat to anyone, regardless of what their press releases say, needs to keep drinking the kool-aid. The same applies for them saying they are not targeting Quddafi.

Take a look who is part of the Arab League:

Algeria
Bahrain
Comoros
Djibouti
Egypt
Iraq
Jordan
Kuwait
Lebanon
Libya (suspended)
Mauritania
Morocco
Oman
Palestine
Qatar
Saudi Arabia
Somalia
Sudan
Syria
Tunisia
United Arab Emirates
Yemen

All support this operation. Several of them have a more than capable air force, yet where are they? Why are they not the ones flying and bombing the shit out of Libya right now? I read Qatar is sending a few jets but that's it.

Because the reason we are there is bogus. It's about the oil, again. And they are going to twist the truth and even lie to everyone to get that oil. They don't give a shit about the Libyan people.

How many CIVILIANS will this mission kill when it's all said and done? If it's like any other operation we get involved in in that part of the world, there will be mass casualties. And why is it OK for the USA, France and the British to kill civilians, but not Quaddafi?

NATO has experience with s300 so I wouldn't imagine that making much difference. They have had combat exercises in France and Germany where the Slovak Air Force brought S-300 missiles. I'm no expert at all but they seem to be mobile and mounted on big or small trailers with a generator and engagement radar. Shouldn't be much problems identifying and taking out those as they typically towed with the now familiar 8-wheeled truck?

Thats not how it works, they dont drive this system around in the open, they use underground rail transit designed for this, shuttle it around, pop it up to shoot then back under...in the meantime they use hundreds of dummy s300 they drive around in the open which wastes opposition bombs. If you studied the Serbian conflict you will see how they brought NATO to its knees. The Serbians never really lost anything, what NATO bombed was cardboard cutouts and NATO admitted this later on. Also, the Slovak s300 was an old export model, very different from what the RUSSIANS use or close allies. When your
travelling at 500mph at 15000ft, it is easy to be fooled.

Wouldn't that be the S-400? Trying to learn.. If Gadaffi has a lot of these I guess he would have used them a lot earlier and wouldn't the deserted troops have known where the underground facilities are located?

Found this about serbia:

"The Serbian air defence unit never managed to launch the S-300. It is believed radar emissions from the launch site were detected by the aircraft covering the F-16s bombing the Pancevo refinery and a precise hit by a NATO missile destroyed the launch site killing Gen Velickovic and a number of other officers. After this failure the Serbs believed the technology would never work and apparently withdrew the remaining S-300s to underground tunnels in the Rakovica suburb south of Belgrade."

If you don't pull the handles on an ACESII ejection seat you're not going anywhere.

The BBC version is a different story, that was a defected government plane that the rebels controlled... and also shot down, own goal style!

Actually, just to clarify what I was saying, I did not mean the F-117A was taken out by a s300, in fact I doubt the serbs ever had the s300 system. The F117A was taken out by
Soviet Isayev S-125 Neva. It was not a direct hit, but taken out by means of a proximity fuze which made the F117a unstable forcing the pilot to eject.

I think it is you getting confused.

The BBC story you linked is dated 19th March. That is clearly not the F-15 in the video.

That was over Benghazi, the F-15 is 1 hours drive outside of Benghazi too. That video was daylight, the F-15 went down in the dark.

[T]wo US airmen were forced to eject from their F-15E fighter jet over Libya on Monday night after an apparent mechanical failure, the US military said.

The wreckage of their F-15E Strike Eagle jet, which crashed at 9.30pm GMT, was found near Benghazi.

Vince Crawley, a spokesman for the Africa Command, said both crew members had been safely recovered and had received only minor injuries. Crawley said the crash was likely to have been caused by mechanical failure rather than hostile fire. He declined to give the location of the crash and would not say how the rescued crewmen were picked up or where they were taken. ...

If you read to the end the US is just older aircraft ...

This is only my opinion. Think about it, whats the chance of a F15 just falling out of the sky,,,about a million to 1 or about the same as Charlie Sheen knocking on your door in the next 10 minutes to give you a blow job, then whats the chance of a plane being taken out by a missile in the middle of an armed conflict? You dont have to be a rocket scientist to work it out. Im guessing a volley of several sams that detonated within range by close proximity..that would cause an electronic/mechanical failure. But a study of that wreckage indicates the possibility of a direct hit, look at the sweep hole, that is almost certainly a missile hit.

The American Government will probably never give us an honest answer on this. Lets see what happens over the next week, if it was some freak accident, then there will be no more planes downed. But if another goes down, I think we can safely draw the conclusion of them being shot down. A good indicator will be at what height they start flying now.

The BBC are saying it was shot down....http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-12794589
So your original post with more accurately reported items would be

... American Jet Fighter

...F15 jet fighter ... the americans are claiming it crashed ... ... crew ... safe

Idiot.

I can understand your thinking but only 2 F-15E's have ever been shot down. Considering the number of combat sorties they've flown that's a pretty impressive number. Could it have been shot down? Sure. Was it shot down? We'll never know.

When your

It seems that you know this matter very good. Yes, in Serbia most of hardware was saved and fake equipment was bombed. (although later, all that hardware was destroyed by Serbs and their government through policy of disarmament). Anyways, Gaddafi don't have s300 . If they have it NATO wouldn't even try anything. As usually, always attacking only weaker . Why they didn't do something in South Ossetia?

think about that

LOL at the people calling it a war, its not. Libya are keeping their heads down and trying not to aggravate the matter. They know that they have no chance in a pitched battle so are soaking up the punches to try and look like the victims.
But it's not a war.

If it was 100% electronics that decided when to eject via missile lock a false hit would REALLY suck... Just saying
