				good bicycle under $500???

			.

I am looking to buy an OK bicycle under $500; I am not planning on going off-road, jumping, doing stunts, riding it over huge boulders or anything of the sort. I know that good bicycles probably start from $2k and up, but what is the best I can get for around $500??? I'll probably ride it once or twice per week just to burn a few calories. Any ideas? . |

GT Outpost is a good bike in that price range. I have a 2008 model and at the time it was about $500 Canadian. Not sure if they still make this models, but it's a good bike.

Googled it and it looks like they are around $400 in the UK. I will check out a few reviews and see how much they sell it for over here

When I bought my mountain bike 5 or 6 years ago it was around $500. Have ridden 100's of miles on it without any problems, well except a few flat tires.

just buy a Trek mountain bike .. they are decent and on the entry levels you can find some cheap bikes .. but still good enough for what you seem to need it for ..

i had a mountain bike, but like you said the position you sit in on those things is uncomfortable as hell, plus that thing was made for offroad. I found the solution, i got myself an 'all terrain' bike which is some sort of hybrid mountainbike-streetbike. bought it 2nd hand for 30 euros a couple years ago. And its great, perfect for asphalt roads |

I paid $500 for my Trek Multitrack 720 in 1995. I've ridden it pretty consistently for the past 16 years and it's still in great shape.

Ya, a $2k and up bike is overkill for someone that's just starting out and will use it casually. When I bought my bike I could have went for the $2500 bike that they had, but figured it would be a waste. If $2k+ is what a good bike is these days then my $500 bike is for welfare cases. lol

I got my bike last year off Craiglist for $60. Put about $200 worth of parts and work into it, now it's a gem.

This is the bike I just got and I love it. I ride it about 10 miles a day in the city and its great for all kinds of riding. Its a Big Ripper (a 29inch version of the famous 1980s Pk Ripper) You can find it for $450-$500.

![]() If you want an all around fun bike that is easy to ride, goes fast, is light and involves very little maintenance this is the one to go with. And remember its a 29" bike... not a 20 or 24 inch BMX bike. |

I bought a Motobecane hybrid jubilee trail for $100 on craigslist. Barely used. It cost around $320 new.

It's good for road and it's ok for trail unless you plan on going down 30% hills...

I bought a Diamondback (made by Raleigh) Sorrento 21-speed MTB last year, and I am very happy with it .. I've put close to 600km on it already.

you can find some nice trek's for just about that amount. If you are just riding on the street/path for excersize, get something hybrid. Mountain bike looking, with thinner flatter tires. No need for mountain bike tires.

the FX series from Trek has some nice ones. probably around the 500 range, maybe the 7.2 or 7.3 |
