Singapore - one of the richest countries in the world with low living standard

Many people think Singapore is one of the richest countries in the world, however, many do not know that it has very low standard of living and low purchasing power. To enjoy the same lifestyle you have back in the States, you will have to folk out probably 3 times more of your money. There are many places in emerging nations becoming like Singapore, getting richer but declining quality of life due to inflation.

America has probably become one of the poorest countries (if measured based on net debt), however, its standard of living is still one of the highest.

Which place will you choose to be in the next 30 years?

Whichever place has the greatest access to...

1. Power.
2. Water.
3. Food.

In the future decades, wars will be fought over natural resources.

wtf are you talking about? No country has made more effort to improve its citizens standards of living than Singapore. It is #1 in Asia for standard of living.

u r right... #1 in Asia if u have big bucks... in terms of living of standard, it actually ranked #49 in the world in 2009... imagine yourself living in a 1 million dollar pigeon hole for life...

I won't be in the USA. It's only going to get worse there. The police state it will be within the next 10 years is going to be simply out of control.

I'll take my chances in Asia.

Well........ of course, incomes and GDP per capita are higher in the US, UK, Europe and so on. The point is that the emerging markets personal incomes, GDPs are on the rise.

When China becomes the number 1 by GDP, personal incomes will still be lower than people in the US, UK, and so on. It takes a lot longer for GDP per capita to rise.

As for the US standard of living, well in order to be a sustainable economy (ie fix the deficit and the national debt) there has to be a serious re-adjustment and it will take time but its very much likely that in coming decades there will be less of a sharp distinction in standard of living between western economies and emerging markets as a global rebalancing takes place.

Right now, UK, US, parts of Europe are not sustainable.

Actually, a lot of economic comentators, reckon the best place to be in the event of major crisis and disasters and shortages is actually the United States of America.

The reason is simply because it is very self sufficient and although it doesnt provide all of its own resources, it has the capability to do so.

The US! Singapore is an amazing island with a real cross section of culture and cuisine BUT the government and laws are strict! Drugs, littering, and other "offenses" are punished severely (sometimes by death). No thanks!!

The worrying bit about the USA is the Food Modernisation Bills making it illegal to grow your own food

Wtf are you talking about? I've lived there for over a year and life was great, cheaper rent than europe and much cheaper food and essentials... only drinks and cigarettes were expensibe (just pick them up at the airport on the way back from the Bali or Thailand weekends

From wikipedia:
  • Singapore possesses the world's tenth largest foreign reserves.[53][54]
  • Singapore's economy has been ranked amongst the world's ten most open,[56] competitive[57] and innovative.[58][59]
  • Singapore is rated the most business-friendly economy in the world.[60][61]
  • he percentage of unemployed economically active people above age 15 is about 2%.[64]
  • Poverty levels are low compared to other countries in the region. The government provides cheap housing and financial assistance to poorer people.[65]
