It's also an eye test since it looked like two plusses at first! I think it's 2.

either or, neither nor, depends on how you work the math problem.

I was taught to work left to right, so do the ( ) then work the x and ÷ from left to right.

Edit: Apparently I'm wrong.

I didn't think an extra set of parentheses were required when it was a multiplication outside a combination, but they are.

I thought you did the inside parens first, then the missing operand is multiplication, then the left side is divided by that result, equals 2.

But I was a pretty bad student. And back when I was in school, calculators didnt exist yet.

Some of you need to review your orders of operation

1) Terms inside parenthesis
2) Exponents and Roots
3) Division and Multiplication
4) Addition and Subtraction

You move from left to right within each level of the order of operations.

Yeah, I was getting it screwed up with something else and was putting that as #1 before parentheses.

I actually look forward to when my kids get into algebra. I was great at it and still love numbers, a little refresher will be good too.

you do the formulas within parenthesizes first, then on the outside going right to left. multiple and division are equal as addition and subtraction are.

Meaning... 48 / 2(9+3) reads 48 divided by 2 times the sum of 9 plus 3

Seriously. Order of Operations people. I suck at basic math, addition, subtraction, mult/div, algebra, etc, but for some reason I can do advanced math, trig, calc, etc.

How does the original equation vary from what he posted? They're the same, aren't they? He added in the parenthesis to help demonstrate the order of operations.

I think a lot of people get confused on this.

The reason why multiplcation/division and addition/subtraction are grouped at the same level and of equal improtance is becaue they're essentialy the same operations.

5/1 = 1*5
2-1= 2+ -1

At least that's how I remember it being explained.
