My statement about .XXX

When all is said and done...
People will be buying .XXX domains and those that do will be using statements like "I had to move with the market", "The Industry has changed and with that change we bought "XXX" domains.

Then later on it will break down to "So and so was a smart business man for buying .XXX".

Watch and wait...
Slowly but surely people will break and make excuses for these business decisions and eventually they will be regarded as "Smart" and "Savey" business men, eventually they will be called bro's or something pithy.

We have seen this a million times in the business.
.XXX will be no different.

So I am going to go ahead and just say it...

Congrats Chris, Joan and Greg.
You guys have sealed your fates as the new industry leaders and legends.

Just give it some time. Things will ease up and before long guys at The Playboy's, The Twistys, The Hun's, Richards Realm's, and a handful of video companies along with The Tube sites will all dive in.

The major brands will eventually cave and dive in. Quite frankly I would not be surprised if they have not already.

All in good time.
All in good sweet time.

I admit I don't know jack about .xxx, or rather all the politics behind it, just assumed stuff, which is why I'm asking this.

Is there something different about .xxx than other extensions? Because if not, then the people who will buy the names are surely people who will buy any other extension. Someone who wants cars.xxx or music.xxx or whatever.

I don't get it, how can this fail, when every ten a penny domain extension has succeeded before? It's a nailed on guaranteed certainty.

Is there something that's preventing people buying names like cars.xxx or music.xxx? Or are there legal or other regulations that only rude words can be bought on .xxx? Or only people who have a verifiable 'adult' business can buy them?

Serious question I have no idea. Just assumed it was a new extension like any other. In which case it really doesn't matter what the 'adult industry' thinks, because most .xxx will be sold to 'non-adult' people.

(I actually think the .xxx looks a lot cooler, for any kind of site, than .co, .ws, .nu or other shitty country code TLDs. Though I'd only buy one if I had a chance to get a decent non-adult word at reg fee cost, which is impossible due to domain pros having that sewn up.)

Funny how people are already greasing the boards with reasons why they think others (read: themselves) will buy into .xxx

Guys at ICM can thank me for this, because thats exactly how .XXX is going to play out. Thats how it always plays out in adult. Starting with groups and individuals it will fall in order.
They will surface, and find common friends and from there it will grow.

Good Game.

Again congrats Chris2.0.
I think I just made your job alot easier. People will read this and begin thinking of a good excuse of why they are registering .XXX.

Me and my excuse? I wont mind designing .XXX domains. Why would a designer turn away business in times like these?

I am alienq.

GFY feel free to ban this nick, I will use my other ones.

I find this rather amusing, somehow you have not looked at the pro's and con's of this scam. Somehow you assume that there is any bennefit in submitting to .xxx.
And give away the control over your very own website and content.

If you dont realy want to be in control oover yor own site then you may as well work as an employee for an other company instead of doing all yourself anyway.

If you were the .xxx guys, what would be your next step... To lobey governments and various groups to have all porn sites have to use .xxx to protect kids. At this point all porn companies are going to have to purchase their .xxx domains to protect their brands and to be prepared for that sort of outcome. I don't see that they have much of a choice now.

Of course the eventual outcome will be even worse for all porn companies as being blocked/filtered will results in even less revenue.

None of the above Tempest.

They will go for the transactions providers first. ICM gets tight with EPOCH, CCBILL, NETBILLING and its the fuck over in a heart beat.

You get the transactions providers in the pocket, and cheaper rate of approval from Visa and blamo. Its done.

Everyone falls in order because everyone follows the money.

Well I would admit that if I could buy a two letter .xxx domain, or a single word .xxx (even something obscure like boats.xxx) I would probably register it and find a use for it.

It's not like in 5 years from now domains like shoes.xxx or pasta.xxx will still be unregistered "because the .xxx tld sucks"

I keep seeing this, but don't see how that is even possible. In the US would it even be legal?

Quote:

AIUI (not much) a company can block their trademark from being registered, without registering it themselves. Which if true seems to be the best way for adult companies that oppose .xxx to proceed.

Personally I think there are already way too many spurious and unnecessary extensions, like .info,. us, eu, .biz, etc. They're just a license to print money. It's the only reason they are created.

The only way I'd buy an .xxx is if a name like cars.xxx or something was available for reg fee, because it could be sold on for more. However two seconds into the Landrush period all names worth registering will be gone.

I also don't see the point in trying to run a site on .xxx because when it goes fully live, it won't just be Kenya and other third world countries banning it, but companies, governments and filter software in countries where people have credit cards.

.XXX won't fail, it will just be fairly pointless and fall into the background, like the other (non com/net/org/major ccTLD) domain extensions that have gone before it.

I'm well known for bashing XXX, but the truth is XXX is more expensive because a certain amount of money is handed out others.

Here is what I don't get about .xxx and why I think there may be a flaw in the OP's post.

What benefit does .xxx give a buisness? Right now there is none. Unless you plan to use the domain to develop a new site, is is meaningless and there is no reason to buy it over a .com other than you might be able to get a name that you wanted (which could lead to legal issues down the road).

So unless the government forces all sites to shift to .xxx there is no benefit to buying one so I don't see why companies would do so other than to just redirect type in traffic to an existing site.

What are the compelling reasons anyone would buy one of these domains?

Personally, I think .xxx will go the way of .name, .coop, .travel and a host of others given time.

There is probably a sheriff in North Florida or Utah that don't want no stinking .XXX in HIS community. We shall see.

Smart money stays on the .com.

I might consider .sex or .gay as a gTLD should they come available.

Just my personal opinion.

Not probably... definitely, and in a lot of other places too including many that we tend to think of as civilized; like half of the EU.

There is no benefit to buy a .XXX, and ICM knows that. That is why their ultimate goal is to make its use mandatory.

The only thing that matters is if a law can be passed in a country that has freedom of speech. All the other reasons to join .XXX is totally worthless.

Well...
I know a couple of them are doing just fine and still living large enjoying retirement.
Not a very good point my friend.

However most yeah I agree fell off the map went out of business or just doing something else.
In hindsight the ones that ended up settling probably only settled because they could afford it rather than deal with it.
