Unfortunately, there is a stigma associated with open source that companies like Microsoft perpetuate at every opportunity. Really, it is purely taking advantage of the lack of knowledge that most big corporate decision makers have about technology in general. In that vein, many of these big companies turn to M$, Adobe or Sun (now Oracle) for these solutions. I know a few Cold Fusion developers who love to tell me that PHP can't do what Cold Fusion can do... running on Windows Servers no less. I don't argue with them because the argument is the chicken and the egg. When someone assumes by faith that something is true you have to do alot of arguing to convince them otherwise.

yeah that is what im coming to understand as well...that the decision makers, and even the so called webmasters big companies hire, just don't know what is good for them.

hmmm opportunity perhaps

nation-x has it right, big companies have mastered the art of doing less with more. More servers, more development time, more maintenance, more money and less performance.

Corporate types are generally pretty clueless. I just started talking with a manufacturing company about their site. They have a good but plain website done completely in cfm. The have a VERY expensive contract ($30k annually) with a webdev firm in Charlotte, NC who takes care of development, hosting and updating. This site is running on two servers. One IIS server and one mssql server.

I figured they must be pushing some serious traffic, have a massive catalog or something but nope. They get around 5k a day and their site is something I could have done in PHP/mysql in a weekend. Honestly they'd be just fine on a vps somewhere. I'm going to pry them away from their current firm, save them a pile of cash and still make a killing.

I am currently in Bermuda interviewing with some very large hedge fund and reinsurance companies. Every single one of them without fail is on the .NET platform over SQL Server. You won't find PHP and MYSQL anywhere.

Nobody is going to write enterprise applications in .NET and then use PHP as the web component. It doesn't make any sense.

last i knew yahoo runs on LAMP or similar stack, as does Flickr. Facebook is partially written in PHP but i think they port it to some type of C using HipHop. Either way, anything is possible, no matter which way you go. it does seem that large institutions like closed source for whatever reasons, educational facilities tend to be heavy on the CF also. there are many enterprise level apps written in all kinds of strange languages... there are more then just those two to look into, if you a fan of using the right tool for the right job.

i hear you loud and clear

right tool for the right job
warchild has a point though, probably easier when courting certain companies to just use what they know.
eh...food for thought, it was what i was after

I use a dedicated hosting.com cf box at work and a shared account for my adult projects (for now). I have been forced to use php as all of the shared or vps servers I have looked into that allow adult don't have cf set up.

I am fairly green at php and may not be doing things efficiently, but it seems like stuff that I can do in a couple of lines with cf take like 30 in php. I miss CF.

If I get to the point where i will need to buy a dedicated box for my adult stuff then I will most likely buy cf enterprise or set up railo.

As you may have guessed, I am not a big corp.... I'll see my way out...

Best of luck with your endeavors.

I don't know much cf. I've toyed with it some but I am certainly no expert. Show me some examples of what you can do in a couple of lines of CF that can't be done just as easily in PHP.
