Adobe Photoshop.... you can use Gimp online as well... almost as good.

Illustrator is technically the program to use for logos.

However you CAN use photoshop instead but there's a lot of special techniques and key settings and what not you have to manually set if you're using photoshop.

Photoshop is for manipulating photos. Fireworks is for chopping up and compressing. Illustrator is what you want for logos and logotypes.
