Have any of you microchipped your dog? If so, are you glad you did it?

Buddy has to go in for emergency surgery tomorrow and they want to know if I want a microchip installed on him. I personally think it is a waste of money, but am willing to hear the experiences of others.

Have you any?

TIA

It's cheap, it won't hurt him and if he somehow gets lost and loses his collar they'll be able to find you easily. Why not do it?

All of our dogs have microchips. I think it is definitely worth the money. A lot of dogs end up dead because the owners can't be found.

No, cause I dont have a dog, but the cat is micro chipped...

Years down the line, when the cat is no more, I will be getting a Dog - A Boston - (if I can find a UK breeder) and it WILL be chipped...

Quite a bit of pet theft goes on around here from what I hear...

Wish Buddy good luck with the surgery

Well, the primary reason I would not do it is because it is my understanding that if he got lost somewhere in Indiana one night, they would have to wait until the next business day before anyone would be able to determine I was the owner and get a call to me. I have two collars on Buddy, both with multiple contact numbers for me (already been thru this shit). I would only be concerned of him getting lost when we were on the road somewhere. I don't see it happening at home. He knows where his food is.

I just think that the chance of him losing two collars at the same time lies somewhere be slim and fat. I think the time I am going to need/want them the most, they will likely be closed. That is why I am asking for real life experience. The $65 has zip to play in the equation.

He is a little upset right now. Additional cuts in other parts of his body are not going to be welcomed. I had not even considered that. He is going to be in so much discomfort I don't know that I want to inflict more.

It's not a cut, it is put in with a big needle. Our little terrier didn't even flinch when they did it.

You mentioned $65 too... uh.. should be more like $20 or $25.

What's wrong with Buddy?

I don't have Sadie chipped, but she does carry a city tag and another one with with my info on it, I'm not worried about her being stolen, being that she's a Rott. but I am going to have her chipped, or tie an iphone to her collar. just so I know where she is .

Baddog. I am very sorry to hear about Buddy.
My folks dogs are and mine is not. (just never go tit done and she wont leave the yard with out me) But, I have found a few dogs that were and they were returned the same day I took them to a vet or shelter. It is not a bad procedure. Just a large shot in the shoulders and if Buddy is having a bit if tail amputated the chip will be the least of the concern.
I vote for the chip and keep your info current. It does no good if you move or don't keep up to date.

My dogs were stolen, and returned to me because of the chip. Just found a French Bulldog in the street, took it to the close vet, and in minutes had the phone number to call to return it home.

You have no idea. I went to a vet immediately after and put out $100. They wanted to amputate his tail this morning (another $1,100) but I wanted his regular vet to give a 2nd opinion first. Went back to the first vet for some anti-inflammatory drugs (another $25). I stopped at the owners home on the way back and told them that so far I had $125 in bills with another $1,100 coming up if the 2nd opinion agreed on the amputation. His response? "There was nothing wrong with your dog's tail when you left."

They have no idea what they are in store for. I am actually looking forward to this. I have not had an opportunity/reason to fuck someone so hard in a very long time. I am actually really good at this. I had a national insurance company have me do what they couldn't and paid me well to do it. It would be in their best interest to adjust their attitude.

Okay, I will go for it. I put this out a few places and there is no reason not to. I am never moving again so no need to worry about that.

Thanks for the input.

It's only a big needle not a cut and i'm sure you'd want him back if someone decided to help themselves to him from the car while you off on one of you trips.

I had my dog chipped when he was neutered, it's more for peace of mind than anything especially if you travel with your dog and he gets lost while on a trip your chances of getting him back are a lot greater.

Sorry to hear of the attack, my dog was attacked yesterday as well but sustained no injuries. I really don't know why people don't leash their animals when they know that they do not get along with others. This is the second time this dog has attacked mine and they still let it wonder around with no leash. Good thing my dog is well socialized, trained and friendly or things could have gotten really ugly.

Good luck with the surgery, hope all goes well

I have both my cat and dog microchipped, for the $60 or so it costs here it's low cost peace of mind should they escape and get picked up.

Yup, both Huskies of mine are chipped. If they get loose, they love to run for the corn fields. They usually come back but who knows.

My rescue Golden came with a chip but thankfully it hasn't been needed yet.
Even though he has a collar with plenty of Id, the chip gives me extra comfort as a backup.

Since money doesn't matter, I can't think of any reason why not to add another layer of security. You're there anyways.
Drop the $60 and extra minute or two. Not doing so may regrettably come back to haunt you.

Your pictures prove your dog is a great companion and family member. Do whatever it takes to keep it that way.
Sorry to here of his attack. Here's to a healthy, speed recovery and lots more pics of good times.

Do it, man.

I used to volunteer at a shelter. Every dog and cat that came in was checked for a chip. You'd be surprised how often those chips would save an animal and reunite them with their owner.

A couple I remember were a dog that the owner's neighbor was supposed to be caring for while the owner was on vacation. The neighbor got arrested for some kind of old warrant, the dog escaped and he would have been euthanized if not for the chip. We got the dog out of the shelter and into the foster system where he remained for almost two weeks before we could get in contact with the owner.

The best was a dog who had been registered to an owner in Arizona. The dog ended up at our shelter in SW Kansas. We figured the owners moved with the dog but when we made contact we found that the dog had been stolen from their back yard almost two years earlier. The owner flew up and got his dog the following day.

You never know what's going to happen. Get the chip.

Buddy said the same thing, but when I pointed out how he always bitches about not having thumbs he asked for a Xoom instead.

He is being worked on now. Losing a tail, his balls and gaining some technology. I may just kick him off the train next week to see how well it works.

Best wishes to you and your canine pal.

My dog was microchipped in 2003 when our home in Lake Arrowhead, along with roughly 25k others, was evacuated due to the Old Fire in the San Bernardino Mountains. The chipping agency, whose name slips my mind right now (there were two at the time in California, there are probably many more by now) was kind enough to bring a mobile unit out to the concentration cam... er, evacuation center... and offer the service free to everybody who had pets there. My dog was -really- pissed off at me when they did it to her (it was a huge needle, my husband said, right in the back of the neck, and our dog actually snarled and snapped at him) and while she never ran away, loads of other people's dogs did and -every single one- was found and safely returned to its proper owner.

Given the chaos of the situation, I found that remarkable and have been a supporter of chipping pets ever since, thinking it a very good idea for those who can afford whatever it costs to have it done 'in the real world' and who see their pets like we do, as part of the family.

Again, good luck with your pup's injuries, here's hoping for a full recovery.

EDIT: Guess I'm late to offer a testimonial, but let us know how the train-test fares... :P

I have ALL of my animals microchipped! I don't want to chance it! And if your vet is expensive, the local humane society or sometimes the county animal control usually do it for around $30. Worth every penny if it ever comes into play!

Well, he is home. He got chipped although I find it quite interesting that they gave him a tag for his collar so people know he is chipped.

I've been meaning to get all my cats and all my macaws chipped. They have specials here once in a while so I've been waiting for the next special since I would need six chips.

Yeah, but that kind of defeats the entire, "what if he loses his collar?" argument.

We understand why you own pets, but most of us are not like you.

Do it. It's cheap but extremely valuable. ;)

I think there will come a time that it will be mandatory (here in NL). That will not be a bad thing. Even if you know your dog will not wonder off, there are a lot of weirdoes around these days.

Do you ride a bike with buddy running along side you? I thought I saw you ride by once.

Poor little guy. Non neutred dogs are much more likely to be attacked by other, even normally friendly dogs, than neutered dogs. So good choice getting that done to help stack his odds in avoiding any future problems with aggressive dogs.

Hopefully the other owner's dog steps up and does the right thing and hopefully budy heals up soon.
