Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility

Fire that up.

Your disk will appear in the left hand side.

Select it.

Then hit FORMAT and chose Mac OS Extended (journaled)

POW

Or you could have done this

You need to put a little bit of forethought into how you will be using this drive.

Being an external (read: portable) drive, if you format it as NTFS, you can read its contents from both
Mac OR Windows computers ... Meaning you can take the drive and plug it into any windows or Mac machine, and read the contents off of it ...

If you format it as Mac OS Extended, the drive is committed to being read by a Mac computer only ...

** Do not format it as FAT32 ... as Mac will not write any files larger than 4GB to it ..

You can read HFS+ on Windows, you just need a little app

No it isn't, see above, and you get the advantages of a HFS_ disk.

in snow leopard i don't think it can write to ntfs... i use http://www.tuxera.com/products/tuxera-ntfs-for-mac/ to write to ntfs formatted drives
