do you have people you don't "know" as friends on facebook?

the whole thing seems so limiting and way too intimate to me, I don't have a facebook, but I wonder about the whole idea, if someone that comes across your page through a friend or common interest or whatever "friend requests" you, do you accept?

do you have "friends" on there that you don't really know?

the internet seemed so much better in the myspace days when it was much more casual and a little more private, facebook has ruined that whole spirit

I do have people as my friends like that, and it's strange. Every so often I'll glance over my friends and think about deleting one of the people I barely know. But, then I decide against it. My reasoning is, they are a friend of a friend and it would be rude to do so.

Now if someone I barely know, or don't know at all sends a friend request I just ignore it, so I don't have to drive myself nuts about whether or not I'm being rude by deleting them. The funny part is, they probably don't give two shits if I delete them or not and I'm making a bigger deal out of it than necessary.

actually, you bring up an extremely good point that I wondered about before, because I know in the past with myspace that it did "feel bad" if someone you "friended" all of the sudden "defriended" you with no reason or even telling you, who is to know if maybe they were happy when you accepted their friend request and they found you interesting for some reason, location, hobby, job, business, whatever and then all of the sudden they go on their Facebook one day and out of the blue you have defriended them, I can see that maybe causing some hurt feelings

I added a friend of a friend who a year and a half later has become by far my closest and best friend (outside of the boyfriend who is my bestest).

You never know how close you'll become to that random person you add.

Did you meet them on facebook or in person? I mean, yeah you see other people posting and acknowledge them, but it's not until you actually meet them in person that you get to know them. Since they're friends of your friend chances are you would have met them with or without facebook anyways.

Meeting someone on match.com or some shit yeah, meeting someone on facebook just doesn't make sense IMO.

Used Facebook as a way to find out we were compatible. Obviously soon went off Facebook and into real life. Facebook was the initial introduction and connection. I only have 197 friends. The people I have absolutely no physical connection to is probably 10% or less.

Actually a lot of my friend base today can be attributed to #Maryland on IRC. We used to have parties at each others houses and then my friend base grew meeting their friends. Most of my friendships start friend of a friend or neighbors when I move and then expands. I am not the type to introduce myself to people when out and about.

Yes, I have like 600 "friends" and around 300 I have no idea who they are and 200 are people that maybe I met once or twice in my life or people that I didn't see for 20+ years. I only interact with my family and maybe 30-40 people, no more than that (and no much interaction either, maybe a "I like" once every 10-15 days )

No. I learned my lesson that some internet people latch on to you even with a small amount of personal details, and so my Facebook is restricted only to direct family and a very small group of old friends. I actually reject most of the requests that I get.

In my case, I just accept their requests if I see they belong to certain associations and NGO which I work with, because I can't keep track of everybody's names and they might feel hurt if I deny them. Not because they look "cool", but because they use it for networking and business or PR or whatever. so is it possible for someone to go on facebook and build up to 1000 friends without actually knowing any of them at all? in other words, can I start up on facebook and be able to have fun with it without involving any real life connection at all?

I'm seeing my facebook now being a mix of friends and people I work with or is in our industry.

I like to keep my facebook more on the personal level so I have started to remove and not add new requests from people who have their company name in their name or logo as their profile picture. Also I stopped assing models when they request it since that's. A pure marketing gimmick.
