Overcharging you for a basic domain registration, which often occurs via their own re-seller plan or some affiliate linkso they cram out even more of your money. Those "offers" seldom represent any real, ICANN registered domain companies but work on commission and by overcharging.

But fraudulently - let's say somebody was stupid enough to fill that form in - would the current registrar who holds that domain warn the domain owner that what was really happening is that the domain was about to be transferred and who knows, maybe even stolen once it was in another shady registrar's control?

I have a buddy who informed me that he uses a service with the very same wording... lol

Then I showed him how to become a domain reseller and get them for $8 instead of $35.

What's funny is that I get snail mail notices like that from a "reputable" registrar all the time as well.

Unless the domain is unlocked and the Auth Code is sent it's not gonna happen.

Wouldn't call it fraudulent nor a scam, but just creative spam. There are lots of indicators that let you know right away that its simply an advertisement trying to induce you into domain registration/seo services. Terms like, "This solicitation", "You are under no obligation...", "This is not an invoice" tell you its just scare spam. Actually looking at it again I don't even think this is for switching your domain's registration, but simply submitting your domain to the search engines, "We are a search engine ranking and submission service company".

it doesn't even appear to be a domain registrar scam , it is simply a search engine submitter service. The wording makes it appear it is from your registrar but the wording says it is just a search engine submission service..

"We are a search engine ranking and submission service company"

How many years ahead have you registered the domain? Spend that $75 on adding a few more to it.

It's aimed at company secretaries who have enough permission to pay something but not enough brains to realise it's a scam. Oh shit' i'd better pay it now while I remember or i'll be in trouble.

These companies look at domain registrations, see who is due for renewal. They get a percentage of people foolish enough to switch to them. Most of these companies are legit, just a high price service of what you are already doing yourself.

Another version of this is the "Doing Business As" registration, several states such as California require. Company I worked for, the Legal Dept. handled DBA renewals, but store managers were getting letters constantly, from these official looking letters saying it was time to renew the DBA registration.

It says so right there, they charge for one year submissions to search engines...
