I Have White Spots On My :::

I have white spots on my TV screen, WTF? Two days ago I saw the first one, then today another one and a few minutes ago a 3rd one popped up. Anybody ever seen anything like this on your TV? My TV is a 65" Toshiba DLP rear projection.

Looks like damage from UV light or heat, but hopefully it's just some debris that you can clean off.

edit: hope it's under warranty

The 'white spot' problem on the Toshiba 65HM167 TV is caused by a faulty optical block processor or 'light engine' in the TV. It must be replaced for the problem to go away.
The bad news is that the optical block processor is expensive and, since DLP TV's aren't manufactured anymore, they are somehwat hard to find. I found one at www.encompassparts.com for $647 of which $220 is a core charge that is refunded when you return the old light engine back to Encompass Parts. So the out of pocket is around $430 with shipping. The Toshiba part number for the light engine is 75006693. Encompass was very easy to work with.

The good news is that you can make the installation yourself. It's a little complicated but with patience and a careful labeling of all wiring, you can make the switch. I did it and my TV now works better than ever (no spots and a much better picture). Get a service manual for the Toshiba 65HM167 at www.servicemanuals.net for $17 (download) and it will give step by step instructions for replacing the light engine. The replacement process took me about 2.5 hours.

Is it worth it? I think so because I love the size of this TV and to replace it with a comparable LCD TV would cost around $2500. Of course, I won't know for a while because if this new light engine fails anytime soon it won't be. Since I bought my DLP TV early on in the product cycle, I'm betting that the replacement is better technology. We'll see.

I thought the same thing, but he's obviously exposing for the white pixels and not the screen.

Macro mode, Dean!

I had the same problem with my Sony DLP, it kept growing more and more and more dots until you could hardly see anything... switched to an LCD now.

DLP sucks anyway, good excuse to get a new LCD or LED.

We had the same issue with ours. Then after we fixed it the picture turned a hue of yellow. Probably be better to buy a Samsung LED/LCD and call it a day.

Would not recommend this, its most likely the light engine and its not worth paying for a service call only to learn its going to cost more to fix than the TV's worth. Prices on LED's have fallen and are extremely reasonable considering the amount of life you'll get out of it.

Dean likes the tv and you are probably right, it's one of the 3 tubes powering the display that's having a problem. I had my rear projection repaired a while ago and I got a free estimate before having it done

In my experience, the only way to get a free estimate on a TV that size is to bring it in to the repair shop, which is a complete pain in the ass when you're talking about a 65'' rear projection.

Shit, I might just put it on Craigslist for $200 just to get it outta here. I found so many people with the same problem and Toshiba isn't do anything about it. One lady said she could count a couple hundred white dots on her screen

Might be a good time to look into a projector system. When I get rid of that TV, I'll have a big ol' blank white wall there. A projector might be cool

I didn't read every reply in the thread so many this has been mentioned already. But if not...

I recently had to buy a new bulb for my Mitsubishi DLP and had debated for a moment buying a non OEM lamp for a small fraction of the price it would cost me to buy one from Toshiba. However after reading around a bit TONS of people complained of them creating these white spots that would not go away. So I decided to buy another OEM from Toshiba and have had zero problems.

So if you by chance bought a cheap replacement lamp at some point that might be your issue.

From what I'm reading, this has nothing to do with the lamp. It has something to do with the millions of tiny mirrors and some of them are stuck, whatever the fuck that means. The only way to fix it is to buy some part that cost about $600 and when you send the broken one back, they will rebate you $200 so it's about $400 total and you have to do all the work, which takes a few hours from what I understand. Just not sure at this point if it's worth the time, effort & money to fix at this point. But thanks for posting your experience!!!

Damn that sucks. I think I would throw in the towel and buy a new TV. I believe the lamp thing I mentioned caused issues elsewhere from what I read (because people said after they replaced the knock off with a OEM lamp the spots remained).

I love my Mitsubishi though. The original lamp lasted me 5+ years (of daily use) and no problems to speak of since replacing it. It does seem MANY people have problems with the same set though.

Well good luck in getting it fixed if you decide to do that. If not, the price on the 83" DLPs have dropped significantly. I believe that will be my next purchase unless I decide to go with a projector.

this looks like a decent deal...

http://www.amazon.com/Mitsubishi-WD-...6141&s r=1-41

there is a video next to the sample pics

I have had it bookmarked for 6 months as my plasma slowly loses it's sharpness.
