Which movies that you enjoyed this 2011?

These are my top 5.

Final Destination 5

More from the deliberately contrived body-count franchise with a nice line in self-aware silliness. The best set-pieces this time around have some of the fun of a Road Runner cartoon, and there?s a fun twist that had me chuckling to myself.

Drive

There?s not a lot going on in Drive, really, beyond the re-heating of some noirish notions from a well-thumbed playbook. It?s less of a great film than a bit of fun with the dressing up trunk, but Gosling does fine, Albert Brooks does better, and the music and cinematography ooze seduction. It doesn?t quite offer the same thrill as driving around the scary bit of town with the perfect song blasting from your in-car sound system, but it?s getting that way.

The Help

The odd bit of genuinely deft visual storytelling stands out in this adaptation of a confoundingly super-popular bestseller. The Help doesn?t have the sharpest bite, but the not-inconsiderable running time zips by, many of the cast are genuinely engaging, and there?s the ultimate sense of a story told well, if with a shortage, perhaps of ambition and genuine insight, but also surfeit of charm.

My Week With Marilyn

Beautifully lit and lensed by Ben Smithard, this film was a pleasure to look at. The storyline is perhaps slight, and you won?t really get under the skin of Marilyn Monroe, despite Michelle Williams? best efforts, but I wasn?t bored, not for one second.

Human Centipede 2: Full Sequence

One of the most unusual and broken power fantasies in all of horror cinema, courtesy of a metatextual conceit. A pathetic man dreams of creating a human centipede, as he has seen and fetishised from the first movie in the series, but even in his delusions he trips himself up and renders himself impotent. A fascinating response to the most off-putting and disturbing audience responses to this kind of horror cinema.

Rubber
An existential horror comedy about a tire that's a serial killer.
You might ask "how is a tire a serial killer?" answer: no reason. Highly recommended.

Attack The Block
British horror comedy from the producers of Shaun Of The Dead about a group of young street hoods who find themselves under siege by voracious ape like aliens in a dicey London suburb. Very good, highly recommended.

The Thing
I realized they weren't going to make a film better than Carpenter's version, so keeping that in mind I liked the film and consider it a worthy prequel.

Straw Dogs
A remake of the Pekinpah classic about locals who terrorize a newly relocated couple. It was alright, but as I recall the original was better. Good if you have a few hours to waste.

Thirst
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0762073/
Written and directed by the director of "Old Boy," Chan-wook Park, it tells the bizarre story of modern day vampires in Korea. It's one of those WTF kinds of movies, highly recommended.

I've seen some good ones this year. Best year for movies in a long time.

Drive was my favorite. Some might think its slow, but if you actually tune in to what's going on -- it's exciting as fuck to watch some actual filmmaking. Great, great movie. Don't listen to the naysayers who forgot to take their ritalin.

Mission Impossible 4 made my hands sweat a few times. Must be seen on a real IMAX screen, not one of those fake ones. Use this map to find a real one.http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UT...6c5915161c3667

The Last Circus -- technically, this is a 2010 movie, but it didn't get watched on a wide scale until 2011. If you want to see some crazy Tarantino style Spanish cinema, watch this one.

Warrior -- I'm not an MMA fan, but this flick caught me by surprise. Some great acting and a few scenes that will punch you in the stomach emotionally. The trailer makes it look cheesy, but its a great little movie.

Sherlock Holmes 2 -- was like any good movie, that starts out ok, then gets awesome in the last 20 minutes. It was so much better than the first one.

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo -- I just like David Fincher movies. That's all.

Melacholia -- if you have the patience, you'll get into this study of deep depression. Blew me away. Kind of good as a sci-fi movie also.

Our Idiot Brother -- something about this movie's sense of humor. Maybe its because I was high, but I laughed pretty hard a few times. I pulled something in my stomach and hurt for a few days.

Hot Coffee -- best documentary this year. Just watch it.

Rango -- best pure western I've seen in years.

Insidious -- some scary ass shit.

Super 8 -- brought me back to my teens, watching an Amblin/Spielberg movie, except it wasn't.

Devil's Double -- insane story, if its true.

They did this chimp wrong!

Tree of Life, better to be high to enjoy it.

Yeah, I thought Idiot Brother was hilarious.

Battle Los Angeles and Cowboys are two of the worst.

I don't know what you're talking about. This year has been the best since 1999.

Saw a few shitty movies at the cinema in 2011.

Think the only one I really enjoyed was The Inbetweeners. Very funny indeed!

"Kill the Irishman" about Danny Greene - good, maybe not great, but not bad either, and based on a true story where they actually used a ton of newreel footage from the real events to give it more authenticity.

Heat was the best movie I watched in 2011. Which says something about modern cinema, because it was released in 1995.

2011 was a banner year for George Clooney and Ryan Gosling.

Got out to see Drive, The Descendants, and Ides of March and I absolutely loved them all.

Actually thought that the Dragon Tattoo remake was better then the original albeit fast paced in the beginning, but I love a good mystery, and there hasn't been a good one like that in a long time.

Melancholia... scared the shit out me though. Beautiful, but scary. That, and HP7 pt. 2
