How big Adult Business is?
I realize it's supposed to be some in-depth research, but let's bring some rough numbers. I'll start, you bring to it what u know or estimate.
The whole industry consists of: - content producers and the sites they operate + models; - webcam sites + models; - webmasters; - billings; - services (design, scripts, instant payments, models agencies, etc) There're ~ 20k+ paysites within ~4k adult affiliate programs (all current CCbill, Nats, epoch, Verotel, Zombaio, in-house scripts, etc). It's hard to tell the number of models featuring those sites. Also there's such thing as clips4sale and stuff like that. It probably gets a lot of production by its members. From what i know there're many regional market like British, German, French and others with its own rules and life. Those sites aren't counted and their number can be big. Japanese market is supposed to be huge. FreeOnes database contains almost 20k models (if not mistaken), but it doesn't represent the real amount of girls ever depicted for a pornsite. Webcams are rolling and major players get almost all webcam traffic, what doesn't work that way for porn sites. Webmasters can be classified as legal (promoting paysites) and illegal (tubes, wares, pornbb, etc). Very hard to estimate. There's a dozen of global billings and some countless number of local billings (paysite merchants aren't counted). And service part. Well it's all those guys hanging at adult boards plus studios getting adult orders as a side-business. What do you think of it? Looks pretty much |

Why do you care how big it is, or isnt?
Seriously, bottom line is YOUR bottom line... If you are earning enough as it is - More power to you. (But no real reason to post) If you are not earning enough, then looking at the 'Size' of the biz, is just like looking at your own fail... And I come from a business plan that is the EXACT opposite to the norm in adult... ![]() |

Keep working on it, because no one knows and you could get cited frequently if you had good figures. The shit they all cite today is from like 1997.

No one ever really knew in the past and know one really knows today. It's all just impressions.
I've been in and around the business since the mid 60s. The best years were probably in the 90s when porn was legal in a lot more places and people had to buy. The amount that was borrowed was a speck. Since the Internet got under way in the late 90s and to today, the trend of giving it away has hurt income. Magazines felt it first with TGPs giving away 10,000s of images. Offline use to be porn shops, Cable, hotel chains and phones. The big seller in porn shops was videos or DVDs. They were a straight sale, rental and the cubicles. Shops are now selling more novelties than anything else according the Madalton, Cable porn I get for free and phone sex I think has been replaced by cams. The only information you will find that's reliable is in Google. Search David Sullivan, David Gold, Paul Raymond, Larry Flynt, Hugh Heffner, Richard Desmond, Bob Gucione, Beate Uhse, Ann summers. Many made enough to invest outside porn and made even more. Then try to search online porn. You'll find an incredible lack of info and following me a lot of people who don't know much. We do know a company is going around buying up a few others. Does that make it a bigger industry today or someone snapping up bargains. Magazines were world wide except for a few countries. Huge market. If a buyer couldn't get Teen Ass bangers, he bought Barely Legal 9 times out of 10. The real money in porn has always been the retail end. As CurrentlySober says. All that matters is what you bank. Being a minnow in a pool of sharks isn't good. There's a hell of a lot of minnows in this business. |

In this day and age I think it would be massive undertaking to even get a rough estimate.

If you want to put on a little effort, I can tell how to get numbers. Use a sample. Pick fifty random pay sites. See how many of those fifty use Strongbox, and how many use Webair, and try to estimate how much content they have.
Send us the info and we'll compare to our database and to the total domains hosted at Webair and have a pretty good estimate of how many pay sites there are, and how much they spend on hosting and content. The idea is this - let's say of the fifty, 33% use Strongbox. If 33% of pay sites use Strongbox and 33,000 sites use Strongbox, that would mean there about 100,000 pay sites or so. Knowing the total number of domains hosted on Webair's DNS and their total bandwidth, you could do similar math, etc. |

That reminds me of another metric. When I started, 80% of the traffic and 90% of the money was adult related, according to a reasonably credible source. Ten years later, it had fallen to about 70% of the traffic and 80% of the money. Looking at trends, five years later we could guesstimate 50% of the traffic and 60% of the money.

I know a few. None of the big online porn companies have published accounts, except for AFF and their share issue tanked.
Manwin are supposed to be the biggest and all we know for sure is they often try to hide their domains behind a anonymous Whois info and we do know the "managing partner" the rest of the partners we don't know. The size of the company we can only guess. Where the money came from for the managing partner to buy it we don't know. Fact is, no one knows a lot. I'm with wizzo on this. Today guessing would be like sticking the tail on the donkey. But it's pretty well agreed it gets smaller all the time. |
