"People in Chicago are going to want to move after this winter"

(Reuters) - Private forecaster Accuweather.com said on Wednesday that heavy snow and extreme cold should be expected in the north central United States, especially in the Chicago area, in the coming winter.

The East Coast faces average to slightly above average snowfall during the winter of 2011-2012 as a Pacific La Nina again drives weather patterns across the United States.

"People in Chicago are going to want to move after this winter," Accuweather Long-Range Meteorologist Josh Nagelberg said in a statement.

Accuweather's forecast projects Chicago will again be hit by extreme cold weather and several blizzards, as it endured last winter when more than 50 inches fell on the city including a single storm that dropped 20 inches.

Severe cold and heavy snow should expected from the Great Lakes across the Midwest and northern plains states, according to Accuweather

I'm 100 miles north of Chicago and what they get we get, usually a bit more.
A harsh winter isn't as bad as it sounds. We are well prepared to deal with large amounts of snow. The main roads are always passable within a day or less.

I think the worst days of winter in Wisconsin are on par with the worst days of summer in Arizona.

However, the cold here makes those few weeks of february in the islands that much better.

Chicago winters can be harsh, but the people who live in that area are used to it and prepared for it, like you say.

Similar to here in Montreal. We could get over a foot of snow overnight, and the roads are clear by 9am.

Seeing as they can't accurately predict weather for next week I'll say they have no clue what winter will be like. Its a guess at best.

Please note there has been a subtle change in terminology.
Its now "climate change". Big difference, for obvious reasons.

I grew up in rural New Jersey, and as a teen I noticed that "snow was stupid". Think about it. You plow your fucking driveway and shovel off the sidewalk and your porch, only to have to do it again four days later. It was a huge waste of time. On top of this it's dangerous to drive in, fucks up you lawn, and generally fucks up your life. It's fun when your ten and you spend Christmas break building snow forts, having snow ball fights, and sledding. But as you get older the tradeoff sucks - less time playing in snow, and more time removing snow.

It also fucks up your roads and fucks up your lawn.

We had a good sized driveway and we had to plow it with a little tractor. We also had a huge back porch and we have to keep it clear of snow because that's where we stored the firewood and we also we had the water pipe below it. Oh, firewood. Fuck, every fall we would spend weekends getting firewood, and then every day have to haul firewood up from the backyard to the back porch to keep the fucking wood stove going. Fuck that.

I live in Northern California, just north of Sacramento. Summers are warm, a bit hot in August. It gets cold here in the winters, but never below freezing, and it never snows here. If I want snow... I can drive north for forty-five minutes and go snowmobiling or skiining. Otherwise, pass.

The colder it drops below freezing the better it feels since your skin goes numb faster. Go outside at 30F and you are shivering. At 0F there is an initial cold sting, but it really doesn't feel bad. Plus there tends to be little or no wind at extreme cold.

Dreading another shitty Winter here. Last year was a nightmare.

Britain always grinds to a halt at the first sign of snow. Why it's so hard to keep out motorways and airports clear i have no idea...

I would think people in Chicago would want to move because they have a maxrist troll as their mayor. Bad things tend to happen to people who allow marxists to lead them.

So far, Emanuel is doing everything he said he was going to do. This is very rare in politics. Chicago crime continues to go down, he is aggressively tackling the budget deficit and standing up to the Chicago teacher's unions. He has pretty much been a best case scenario.

Right wingers should be fearful of him and his potential successes in Chicago over the next several years. This mayoral position is just a stepping stone for him to eventually run for president. I think he has a real shot at getting there someday.

See, it's accuweather, a classic example of the difference between weathermen and weather predictions as a business, and science.

Accuweather is famous for creating a business based on taking meteorological data made availabel by the government and universities, and using it to make weather predictions for sale.

BUT, it's a business, based at best on meteorology. It is not climatology, it doesn't claim to be.

And, it was wrong, in this case. Which in and of itself proves nothing - WEATHER IS NOT CLIMATE. Weather has natural variations, which can't be predicted with any real certainty.

But, one thing the climate models predict, and tell us to expect, is that meteorology will fail more and more often, as the heat engine of the climate is driven to greater mathematical chaos and fluctuation.

And the old weather models of hundred year storms will have to change. Meteorology as a discipline, AND as a business, looks to already be breaking down. It's short term predictions are better than ever, with the new technology, but it's long term predictions are failing more and more often. They predict hurricanes - which happen, but dont hit the usual places in teh US because the heat islands over the ocean have changed. They don't predict hundred year tornado outbreaks, or hundred year floods, or fire seasons, but those do happen.

But, memorize this - WEATHER IS NOT CLIMATE.

The thing is, the actual science does not show a lot of connection between sunspot cycles and weather, OR climate.

And what you are claiming is just numerology.

CME's are not "Hot" - they are charged particles, mostly hydrogen ions as I recall, cooled down to just about the ambient temperature of the vacuum by passage thru 93 million miles of vacuum. If you put your hand in it it would freeze solid in a few seconds.

They are charged, and energetic, but not "hot". They don't heat the earth. It's not like a flame from the sun touching the earth.

I wasn't thinking of it as heat, so much as energy/particles affecting our environment. Weren't they saying other planets in our inner solar system were also experiencing extreme climate change or global warming? Asking because you seem to know a bit about it, and I really don't.

Numerology maybe, but an interesting coincidence looking for extreme heat waves going back through 7 peak sun cycles or 77 years at a time. Freakish heat wave happened in 1859, and before that in 1782.
