Question about American Cops...

The TV show 'Cops' follows officers ALL over america...

They tend to use the phrase 'Real Quick' a hell of a lot... ie:

Can I just search you, real quick? OK?
Gonna ask you a few questions, real quick? OK?
Just gonna take a look in your car, real quick? OK?

etc etc...

Is this a police 'technique' or just a speech pattern thing?

Probably an American thing. I guess I say it quite often, now that I think about it.

Well yes and no. I know that when they are shouting at perps to get on the floor, hands behind the head, roll over onto the belly etc, they use the phrase 'DO IT NOW' over and over again, and apparently thats a 'technique' to 'bombard' the perp with so much info, that he just gets confused and complies...

I wondered if the 'Real Quick' was the same thing, but on a more subtle level...

yup its a technique no doubt they are trained to say it they are also trained say things and use body language to make you agree to whatever they ask you to do.

Like my lawyer says theres three rules whenever you deal with a cop

Rule #1 Shut the fuck up

Rule #2 Shut the fuck up

and finally rule #3 Shut the fuck up

It's a pressure / control technique to get people to think quickly. You can refuse the search request until they get a warrant, then they will consider that "probably cause". Why wouldn't you want them rummaging through your shit? They're cops!

The "OK?" part at the end is a way to get you to think that you don't have any options. Most people don't think on their toes when in situations like that...

Example: "Just gonna take a look in your car, real quick? OK?"
Viable Response: "Actually, I don't feel comfortable with you going through my car without a warrant. Am I under arrest? If so, do you have a warrant to search my car? I may be open to you searching my belongings, but first let's talk about something else, do you mind if I record this entire process on my phone camera? I'm researching for a film that I am working on and would like to understand a little better how things work."

The things you mentioned are sales / control techniques. Most people fall for it.

Dont know who told you that, but simply put, its not true.

The " Do it now" command is just that. A Command. They usually make it loud and clear to make sure the suspect heard it, and anyone else listening.

You would be surprised how many people will not " Do it Now " unless told to. It is a follow up command to make sure the person knows that its supposed to be done right away versus when they decide. The cop is making it His decision rather than the suspects decision.

The OK posed as a question is to illicit a response. not to make you feel like you dont have an option. If you say no the dont. If you say yes they do.

If you dont reply then its a No.

Ask an attorney.

then we shall agree to disagree fine sir.

After spending 900 hours in the passenger seat of police cars from 4 different counties as well as 100 hours attending courses for the same counties police academies, I know its different. when you put that amount of time into a research project you ask the questions, you talk to the right people and not just listen to babble.

Just thinking about it with common sense involved. A cop has just stopped a suspect. That means there is a good chance the guy has done something wrong. That means he is already nervous. So ask yourself. Why would you want to complicate that matter by confusing him? If he is scared, and confused, he is highly more likely to do something that will get himself or others hurt.

If the cop confuses him and he does get hurt then all the " Witnesses " will say that the cop confused him. If the cop had been more straight forward about what was expected, then the guy would not have been hurt.

I was pulled over once with expired tabs and the police asked if they could search my car. I responded with "I prefer you didn't.", they did anyway and cited that they thought I may have some weapons or drugs. They found a brass knuckle belt buckle in a bag in my trunk after throwing the entire car around for a while and making a complete mess.

"Possession of Dangerous Weapons" is what I was charged with, the entire time I had to go take a piss and told them. I sat in the back of the car for 2 hours while they went through all of my stuff, and my bladder was literally about to explode.

It doesn't matter if you say no or not. They are going to do what they want, regardless of what is legal or not. To think all cops know the law and follow it to the letter, would be like thinking all lawyers know how to belly dance.

Fair enough then. I cant argue, as I cant just magic up one of the documentaries I have seen... But I can assure you that I have...

I actually lived stateside for over 7 years, and have always been interested in the different speech patterns between the two countries...

Hence my OP about the 'real quick' saying... But as for the 'Do it now'... Its been stated on TV, that the reason is to bombard them with so much info, they just comply. Both with the USA and the UK police...

I have seen it many times - But as you say, on that note, we will have to just disagree

Peace

I never once said all the cops know the letter of the law and follow it.

Had you not had the knuckles in the car you could have hired an attorney and sued them.

had you pee'd youself in the car you might have also been able to sue them.

only thing on the pee part is you needed a witness that heard you say repeatedly that you had to pee.

you don't even need permission to record a police officer anymore. its a violation of your rights if they tell you no you can't. This just went all the way to the supreme court and they found it was lawful to record a police officer against their will.

I certainly think they are trained to to say "take a look in the car real quick, ok?" as a way to get more people to say yes than if they said "do I have your permission to search your car?" It's just like sales people will do - "we'll do this real quick, okay?" rather than "do you want to do this?"

I always decline, telling them I have an appointment or whatever, trying to be as friendly and respectful as possible about declining. 90% of the time, they'll ask a couple more times, then give up. Once, they brought the K9 out to sniff the car.

Just 30 minutes ago I got a warning for 12 over and earlier today my brother was so engrossed in a phone call that he didn't see the FOUR cop cars behind him until they started to pitt him. He only got a speeding ticket for his accidental high speed chase, so I think being respectful makes a huge difference, but I respectfully decline to let them search.

You also have to be careful when they ask two questions rapidly. Not allowing you time to respond to the first.

Have you been drinking tonight? Do you mind if we search your vehicle?

Definitely sounds like a technique to put the suspected person at ease. "Oh just a quick search, he won't find the crack rocks in my socks."

Several people in the thread clearly do not understand probable cause, or what officers have the right to search on a stop or field interview.

Don't get your information on this subject from GFY. Could be the difference in you going to jail, or walking away.
