United agree £24m van Persie deal

Fans of English Premier League footie, place your predictions here as to how this will work out (for both clubs) and we'll revisit the thread at the end of the season to see which GFYers knew best

http://www.football365.com/news/2155...For-Van-Persie

United agree van Persie deal

The announcement comes after an intense period of negotiations and is subject to Dutch striker van Persie passing a medical and agreeing personal terms.

"Manchester United is pleased to announce it has reached agreement with Arsenal Football Club for the transfer of Robin Van Persie," said a club statement.

"The deal is subject to a medical and the agreement of personal terms. A further announcement will be made in due course."

It is not anticipated there will be any problems with either remaining part of the deal.

And providing it goes through without a hitch, van Persie could face Everton in United's opening Premier League game at Goodison Park on Monday.

No fee has been confirmed by United, although it is believed to be around the £20million mark, with further payments to Arsenal depending upon success in the future.

It has been suggested van Persie will sign a four-year deal. The transfer represents the biggest deal United have done since Dimitar Berbatov's club record £30.75m move from Tottenham in 2008.

It comes at a time when further questions are being raised about the finances available to Sir Alex Ferguson.

This will now be of little concern to the United boss, who has consistently stated how much backing he has received from the Glazer family.

Despite the presence of England Euro 2012 star Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez in his squad, in addition to Berbatov, who has been widely tipped to leave Old Trafford, Ferguson made van Persie one of his main summer targets.

The Red Devils initially lodged a bid for the 29-year-old last month, but this was turned down by the Gunners amid further interest from Manchester City and Juventus.

However, City never followed up an initial inquiry, while van Persie made it clear he was not interested in a move to Serie A.

Having taken the unusual step of confirming a bid for van Persie on United's pre-season tour of South Africa, Ferguson is then said to have intervened in a deal that was in danger of stalling by speaking directly with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.

Although Wenger did not want to sell his star man to a rival club, he realised the Gunners were in a tricky situation, with supporters turning against their former favourite during a pre-season encounter with Cologne on Sunday.

United fans will certainly be thrilled by the potential of Wayne Rooney partnering last season's Golden Boot winner.

Van Persie scored 37 goals in all competitions, enough to land him both the PFA and FWA player of the year awards.

In addition, the Holland international managed 15 assists.

If there is a risk to the transfer it is van Persie's patchy injury record.

His 48 games last season was by far the most during his time at Arsenal.

In only three of his other seven seasons has he featured on more than 35 occasions.

Ferguson will presumably believe he has the resources that will ensure not too much is demanded of van Persie, especially as Welbeck is believed to be on the brink of agreeing a new contract.

It also brings to an end one of the summer's most long-running transfer sagas.

Van Persie is expected to fly straight to Manchester to complete his medical tomorrow after he was left out of Holland's friendly with Belgium in Brussels.

You mean in England, right? Pretty sure Roma paid more when they bought Batistuta from Fiorentina.

After very limited google searching looks like he signed for 22 million on several sites and one site showed 28 million. Batistuta stayed with Roma for a couple of years and was then transfered out for free! Either way that amount of cash for VP at his age and injury history is crazy.

Looks like Fergie is looking for 1 last good year before he retires

Wanna make a side bet, Van Persie will score over 100 goals for Man Utd in his 4 years?
I think this is a great signing for Utd, takes some pressure off Rooney, someone else to create chances and put the chances Rooney creates, away! I think it will also enable him to score more goals this season then ever before.

Pretty sure it was more than £30 million, with all the clauses and everything. Regardless, I agree £24 million for a 29yo is a bit much. That being said, have you seen the recent transfer prices lately? No wonder clubs go into debt left and right, between buying players and paying them, it's a fucking asylum...

You mean like he created chances and put them away in the EC? ;)

Well, from a life long Gunners fan, I can but wish RVP all the best with his future. Last year was the FIRST year he had put in a full shift for the club (and what a shift it was) in 8 years.

While I feel slightly betrayed by the fact the he appears to be showing no loyalty for club and fans during our lean years when we were loyal to him during his, I understand that he wants to achieve things and perhaps make a LOT more money while doing so.

Shame to see him go and I see a bleak season ahead if we don't make a few more crucial signings. We seem well balanced in midfield but need crucial reinforcements up front, in defence and a good backup in goal. The new signings (Podolski, Giroud and Cazorla) should be very very good for Arsenal but the way other teams are shaping up, these 3 signings alone don't seem quite enough.

Hopefully, we still qualify for a CL place!!

How many goals did Holland score total in the Championships? Can't just blame 1 player, the team has to provide for him and give him the opportunity to provide for others. I think we all agree that it wasn't Holland's best ever tournament.

I may be wrong about him and he could be a total flop... it is just my opinion, let's come back in May and see how he did. I'm excited to watch Utd this season, I think he'll bring some freshness to them, they missed the title by 1 goal last season, they needed a striker capable of banging in 20+ goals and they got it IMO. Should make for a great season.

Good time to bump this thread. 4 goals in 2 games. With Rooney out injured for 2 months, this was an absolute master class of a signing from Utd! I predict 15+ goals by Christmas day for Van Persie.

Well-timed bump, yes if VP stays fit then he could be the difference of finishing 1st or 3nd

$50 says he has 15 or more in all competitions by Christmas day 2012.

I reckon Fergie end up pulling Rooney back to an advanced midfiender role and leave RVP and/or Wellbeck up top. That way, he gets more of the ball and can influence the game more without getting an earbashing for leaving his striker role.
You heard it here first!

I hope for RVP its not bad but for 7 years these international breaks have not been kind to him

" Manchester United have been dealt an injury blow with the news that Robin van Persie picked up a knock while on international duty this week.

The 29-year-old was subbed at half-time during Hollands 4-1 World Cup qualifying win over Hungary on Tuesday night with a thigh injury.

The former Arsenal hitman has a poor injury record after seeing his first six years at the Emirates plagued by a series of injuries, so this latest set back will be a worry for Sir Alex Ferguson.

Dutch coach Louis van Gaal confirmed he took the striker off as he didn’t want to take any risks:

‘We took off Robin for precautionary measures. It doesn’t seem to be too serious, but you never know. We didn’t want to take any risks.’ "
