Obviously # 2 is the better choice aesthetically (on a white background) but the 90s emboss effect on # 1 could easily give a better response under the right circumstances. Split test it.

I give a higher weight to this answer, since A) we don't have context here, and B) what we think is aesthetically pleasing has little bearing on how it might convert in your production environment. Run an A/B or multivariate (with other elements) test and choose based on that data. If you need help with A/B testing, hit my ICQ.

edit - IMO using "free" doesn't mean much online anymore. I'd say most folks are savvy enough to know that "free" doesn't really mean free anymore and is usually a deceptive ploy.
