Why would you want to do that? That's a ton of work, a lot of hours, and your income potential is limited.

One of my closest friends growing up... his family(dad, uncle, aunt, and grandfather until his death) owned all of them in this area(about 75-80 miles in any direction). They're very well off, but they owned something like 60+ stores. I know my friend's dad sold his for 8 figures a few years ago.

As Rochard said, though, I wouldn't want to deal with the headache. That's why my friend's dad got out.

people who buy franchises don't buy one and manage it expecting to get rich. Usually they'll get a handful and hire people for the day to day. Still a lot of work though I imagine.

I had an interesting conversation with the GF about this yesterday. She's a real estate broker. We started talking about how some are ghetto and some really nice. She was telling me how hard they are to sell. They get punch lists from corporate about all the upgrades and changes they have to make every year. Many owners don't or can't do it.

But she said that when they go to sell to a new owner, it all has to be up to speed or they will not allow a transfer of ownership, so many find themselves in situations where they need to spend 6 figures on each location just to be able to sell out.

Funny you say that as McDonalds profit wise are a lot like gas stations.

McDonald's no, but I have a personal 40% stake each of my our family's 2 A&W locations. A&W requires a minimum $1,000,000 liquid assets to be considered for a franchise location. McDonalds if I recall was significantly more. One of the reasons we opted for A&W, however our decision to go with A&W rather than McD was based on McD languishing profit margins at the time before they rebranded themselves with their new enhanced gourmet style sandwich menu.

Once you get one location, then it's very addictive to add more locations. A&W corporate are great and they are like family, very helpful in cultivating a very profitable business model. We do quite well and the franchise has served us well

You're pretty stupid. McDonalds are money making machines. It is a lot of invest as far as startup capital is concerned. But if they did not make money hand over fist. They would not be open all over the place.

There used to be a guy here named Heshie who would always post in threads about franchises - he owned the master franchise rights to Dunkin Donuts in i think Syracuse. He said it almost killed him - a horrible existense. For most people buying a franchise is buying a job - a hard job.

the good franchises won't sell one to you unless you work it yourself, they don't want people who think they can open the franchise and hire somebody to run it for them.

many franchises are shady, people need to read the franchise agreements very carefully - like somebody said above they can and do force you to do expensive upgrades - new signage, remodeling the interior etc - and not only do they take their royalty %, they also force you to buy everything from or through them, at a nice markup for the franchisor.

of course there are lots of people who have become wealthy with successful franchises.

any of the nice franchises require you to have big liquid assets and i don't think you're allowed to include your home - so how many people have 1-2 million liquid.

They are basically a guaranteed income. I believe it is one of the best investments you can do if you have the money.

They do a research, decide where they are going to build the restaurant for you, supply the furniture and teach you how to run it effectively in their training course. They also train your employees for free.

Your fees are 9-16% for the rent, 5% for the franchise and 5% for marketing.

All you need is the money + they have some special rules, like you should be the only one involved in the business.

You'll be surprised that A&W do quite well. At our last corporate convention, revenues of A&W in North America last fiscal year was significantly higher than Wendy's and Arby's revenue. While having higher revenue than Arby's is not surprising but Wendy's are quite profitable and A&W did much better . A&W flys under the radar but it does quite well and we have no complains

That's an epic fail on the part of the location you went to. The root beer is the bread and butter of the franchise. For it to be all out shows poor management because we usually have 60% capacity of bottled and tapped root beer at our locations at all time. We mix our own root beer syrup for the tap so I can't imagine how a location ran out of both versions at the same time

what's the ballpark average net income for each A&W store?

I remember hearing stories about how Quiznos were basically a nightmare to own. Sounds like they charge each franchisee a ridiculous amount for their ingredients and they are basically forcing their own stores out of business due to high costs. There's been one close up already around here in the last few years.

edit:

this is some great reading in the comments:

I have a friend from High School who's family owns about 10 of them.

My father is looking to retire and sell his stake in his company. He wants to open a Tim Horton's.
