Loud Tv Commercials

turn it down assholes

Federal Communications Commission (FCC or Commission) rules will soon require commercials to have the same average volume as the programs they accompany. In the Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation (CALM) Act, Congress directed the FCC to establish these rules, and they will go into effect on December 13, 2012.

I hate this too, 1 of the reasons why i threw my TV out of the window(I have never regretted it.)
Also been looking for a software program that limits the audio on a pc at a sertain DB level so this shit would be toned down automaticly.

The CRTC ( Canadian version of FCC ) passed that law last September I think and the commercials are way better now that the volume is the same up here in Canada.

That always irked me. Our home theater is set to 1 of 50 on volume dial and it's just at right volume for night-time without waking the kids but when a commercial comes on.. it rattles everything and I have to scurry for the mute button because commercials are as loud as the tv program would have been on volume 15 of 50.

Most Canadian broadcasters already fell in suit with these new rules already over the past couple months so luckily, I didn't have to resort to regular TV speakers at night..

DVR it all and start the show halfway through and you dont have to deal with the commercials.

Didn't know the CRTC finally passed that, the annoying loud commercials was one of the reasons I cancelled my cable a few years back.

Didnt realise that .. OMG its about time

Are you sure its active? and on all cable chain

A commercial just started, and ya seems the volume is the same.. wow. finally

ANywya i never understand why the advertiser didnt complain , because high volume = lower/mute or change channels, so very unproductive

I hope the law will apply also to web, because on Tou.tv (radio canada web) the ads are higher volume and it piss me off !!

I have used a audio compressor on my TV, works great with commercials and quiet/loud movies

This is a bad day for audiophiles.

Audio compression (not the digital kind but the volume-kind) hurts audio quality, and "compresses" audio volume to reduce the loudness of things like explosions, and increase "quiet" sounds like whispers, so that they all sound the same volume.

While the industry makes progress in audio quality, higher bandwidth and more audio detail, some cry babies too lazy to turn the volume down or buy their own compressors (or audio devices with compressors built-in which alot of manufacturers have now), you are forcing broadcasters to do it for you.

People do not realize the shit audio quality they are forced to listen to these days. If you want proof, just check out any FM Rock station (such as CHOM here in Montreal - the kings of compression). Next time they play some Pink Floyd ("Mother", "2 Suns in the Sunset", "Hey You" for example), notice how everything is the same volume. "Hey You" starts with a quiet guitar, with then louder drums around 1 minute in, and then the whole band goes KABOOM around the 2 minute mark. The difference in volume is intentional and a part of the music created by the artists for dramatic impact.

The same is true for the audio and music artists of movies. Compressors ruin the movie experience. When this law goes into effect, some dweeb and KSUX will just crank the compressor to full because some suit is tired of the old bags calling at 3am to complain that "Murder She Wrote"'s Angella Lansbury is talking too loud.

Even worse, compression will make the quiet things LOUDER. This means an increase in HISS and other artifacts (especially of older movies) as the compressor tries to do its job during moments of movies that are supposed to be quiet.

FRINGE plays on FOX (USA) and CJOH (Canada), and the sound quality difference is noticeable. While CJOH doesn't compress as much as they could, you can hear the compressor working - it sounds like someone is turning the volume up at quiet moments, and down during louder moments. sssSSSSsssSSSSsss..... For this reason I only PVR the FOX version.

One more killer. All that money you spent on your cinema amp is now partially wasted. One of the things that make good amps great is the dynamic range. A good amp has wide dynamic range which means among other things, that you can crank up the volume very high without hearing any "hiss" generated by the amp. This is one of the things that make it better, and more expensive. Well congratulations - the best amp in the world won't help you because now the TV station (the source) is now giving your amp lots of hiss and other shit that should never be there to begin with.
