When I lived in San Antonio years ago we drove down to Mexico and walked across the boarder. Every male eye was on my wife. Every group of males hanging around were sizing me up.

The local police were carrying assault rifles, their uniforms were messy, scuffed knees on some, worn shoes, etc. And these were the guys we would turn to if there was a problem? Fuck that we left after 20-30 minutes. This was 15 years ago and being a boarder town probably much worse today.

The sad thing is that in the last 6 - 7 years the drug war has exploded and now Cartels run some areas and the police are just there for show. Acupulco is a major drug running area and can be very dangerous. I laugh how we glorify the violence of the prohibition era in the USA but when you see what happens when Drug lords do run a city its pretty fucking scary

I was just in Cancun for a couple weeks and its very safe, same with Cabo and Peurto Vallarta. Its sad what happening in Mexico

Where did you cross at? I'm in Del Rio, Texas right now for a few days, about 150 miles from San Antonio and right on the border of Ciudad Acuna, Mexico. I go into Acuna all the time and it's relatively safe as far as the border towns go, but you learn one thing quickly about Mexican men, and that is they will fight at the drop of a hat. Doesn't matter if they are 4 feet tall and 120 pounds, if you get into it with them they will start swinging...

In the 4 years I've been coming here I haven't heard about or seen any violence in Del Rio itself, but it's definitely possible in Acuna. They do have the Zetas there but they only butcher each other. You obviously have to be smart and stay out of certain areas, but if you are in the downtown area of Acuna and aren't looking for drugs you are actually pretty safe. it was something about some tourists in del rio got caught in some spillover violence and lst their heads. out on a boat on that lake there if i recall, i've only been to del rio once and it was by accident.

I do remember that but can't remember if that was Del Rio or not, and for some reason I can't find it in Google. If I remember the story correctly the husband was shot because the cartels mistook him for a rival smuggler. Del Rio is a huge fishing town though with Lake Amistad...

I went on another tour with the same company and met the tour operator who got him out of jail that day and he is a witness in the legal proceedings against the thai police!
