USA to be energy independent in 5-7 years

"Mukesh Ambani, the billionaire chairman of Reliance Industries Ltd., said that the U.S.?s development of shale oil and gas will make the country energy independent as early as 2018."

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-0...5-7-years.html

This is huge! The US imports $500 B worth of oil a year. The trade deficit would go away.

Countries that have trade surpluses tend to have higher real estate prices. Excess cash is slushing around and it goes for housing most consistently.

Everyone seems to think the only place in the world that has oil is the Middle East. Nothing could be further from the truth. Instead, oil is the ONLY thing that the Middle East has. Instead, the United States has been exploiting everyone else's oil.

We get most of our oil from Canada and Mexico. And we have lots of our own oil too.

And don't forget the importance of our refineries.

I keep hearing that refineries are a big deal. Two just closed on the east coast. They could not make money.

Rochard - big oil near Bakersfield. You have an oil boom coming your way. I drove out to the North Dakota one and it is amazing.

The US (and Canada) also have lots of untapped solar, wind, and nuclear energy too. Despite all the crap in the world, things are actually starting to look a little better in this area.

You know what would be a tremendous boost? The government(s) should stop giving tax breaks to the oil companies and start giving them out to other energy sectors to help them explore and grow. The carbon (oil) industry is already super profitable and tax breaks are not needed by them anymore. Money should be invested in cleaner energy (and not that "clean coal" bullshit).

there's been much discussion re: this since the iea released their report on this back in december.

one who disagrees:
http://energy.aol.com/2012/11/27/not...-independence/

The news that the US will become energy independent by 2017 is simply not a fact. For the US, energy independence is an unlikely goal. In fact, it could provide more harm than good.

If we stopped importing oil from Mexico we would just turn around and start giving them a 100% handout.

A large part of the US will be 500 meters lower than their current elevation in a few years time, once all the fracking sinkholes start opening up ...

The good thing about this is, with as much as 15% of the US gone subterranean, the cost of heating and cooling their homes will be much less!

If the US had spend the cost of the Iraq war on Energy dev you would already be enjoying being energy independent. Now you just have debt and Iraq is still a turd.
