I'm in a relatively small market for film / television projects, but weekly there's some schmuck trying to pull something along the lines of what this posting references.

When I lived in LA and was trying to get into the movie biz there was an endless sea of people looking for free crews/gear etc. I worked on a couple of the projects just to get something on the resume. During those projects I was offered numerous jobs to work on other movies so long as I was willing to work for free.

The only other one I did for free was a project where the producer had sold her two previous projects and signed a contract with the crew that said if the project gets sold you get paid.

It was a two week shoot that was actually pretty fun and she ended up breaking even on the project even though it didn't get big distribution and paid the entire crew.

Maybe all the non-paying jobs are having an effect on rates generally? I just took a quick look at creative services ads on LA Craigslist and found two photographers willing to do headshots for under $100 ($50 and $90 respectively), and a video production company offering to do music videos (from pre- to post-) for as little as $300: http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lgb...915826763.html

I'm doing 2 camera/operator wedding shoots and my base package is $1200. I pay for someone to do B roll and After Effects. I have had a least one booked each week and am already booking for next year.

I have worked on shoots for all of the reasons posted above for free, but my gear doesn't work for free.
