a question for photoshop peeps

so adobe... is going cloud with no more hard copy releases from what I understand....

what exactly does that mean in working reality? if my ISP drops the ball I have to stop working?? or does it mean I have to install software form the adobe site ad then be and connected for it to work? does it mean the app is ONLY online and I need to be connected to edit???

Did you read the info on the Adobe web site? This is a pretty good explanation of the misconceptions that I keep seeing people asking about: http://terrywhite.com/5-myths-about-...reative-cloud/

I've been using it since September.

Its a cool deal... download all the products you want for $49.95 a month or just $19.95 for Photoshop.

Every time they come out with an update your application manager lets you know and you install when you wish. No need to wait until next retail upgrade and installing the next version. Its just there.

Losing Internet doesn't stop you from working that day. There is something like a 5 day grace period for that, or for when you might be playing with it on a plane or in a motorhome with family, etc.

from my brief reading it's not as bad as it sounds - the software is on your machines, you DON'T need to be connected to the Net to work, you need to be online just once in a 30 day period for them to check you're a valid subscriber.

they are risking a lot - their huge user base came from people weaned on pirated copies of Photoshop. if they are successful at ending piracy of their products the next generation coming up will have moved on to other software for photography and design.

Jim I'm maxed out with production 90% of the time working from 4am to 8-9pm... AND I have no interest in PS other than a tool I must use everyday... I don't actually want to 'join' anything or 'logon to' anything or 'have any more interaction' with adobe than I do now if that makes sense to you.. and thank you for the information. PS can you take a fucking picture of a pussy without a hand in the way? just askin.... you know?- Brian

So in other words, you are too lazy to spend two minutes to look up information yourself about a tool you use every day- that makes you a tool yourself. The link I provided was the most concise explanation answering your question for you and all the other dummies who don't have any reading comprehension either. I'm sorry to hear you are working such ridiculously long hours. Keep at it- maybe you'll figure the business out someday, lol.

Although I use at least three Adobe apps on an almost daily or at least weekly basis (Photoshop, Premiere Pro and Encore) I'm honestly not as high on the subscription idea as you are, Dean. But I can see the advantages as well as a few disadvantages, so I'm reserving judgment for a little while. I'm not surprised however that a top professional like yourself is so positive.

I do EVERYTHING myself Jim... always have since day one... shoot almost everyday, do all the editing, shooting, booking, paperwork, shopping, set design etc... and yes I thanked you for the link, and yes I did understand.

I hadn't realized you were such a condescending little prick BTW...thanks for clearing that up for me

so you are going for the updates... my needs are met currently by CS6 so I'm good for some time I hope...

Deano, do you imagine putting your creative choices in the cloud, sending RAW files the client, and letting them do the processing?

Come on, now: You threw a smart-ass little comment in when you thanked me for the link so don't act all surprised if you got a couple back. All of us in the content production biz had Adobe on our mind since the big announcement. Hopefully some others reading find it useful as well.

Jim I rarely use Photoshop and process everything in bridge... to me it's like being excited because Pennzoil came out with a new drip pan to catch the oil when you do an oil change... one that I'm not sure will work with my current oil change station.

this is the way to consider me: I became a shooter because I was disabled and had a family to feed and clothe, not because I find it fascinating...

I agree with you, CS6 does more than I need already and does it well, time spent learning something new would be better spent doing something else

I'm not all that excited about the subscription model either even though I use at least three Adobe apps regularly. It has some upsides and downsides. Maybe in a year or two when major new features or video codecs are introduced I'll jump on. I'm taking a wait and see position currently as the Creative Suite 5.5 has everything I need.

I assemble video with vegas video.. and rarely use anything other than bridge.. the only thing I wish adobe would do is write a filter to compensate for f stop variation using a constant stop zoom which they have been unable to figure out, even though I have called them 3 times about it. that and allow 3rd party filters to be used in bridge...

I'm still using CS5 and although my needs are met, upgrading may improve stability and speed. Plus I now use Premiere Pro just as much as I use Photoshop so I'm excited to upgrade PP as well. On occasion I'll need to do some heavy audio editing & cleaning and I'd like to be able to use Adobe Audition for that since it integrates very well with PP. I also have an interest in learning After Effects and have already been playing around with Speedgrade. So for $50 a month, I have access to every Adobe product that I need...and updates.

For me it's not so much about having the new features as much as it's about having the latest "stable" technology. Of course the new features are great too but it's more about speed & stability.

No, I don't imagine sending raw files to clients and let them process them. Can you imagine what my pictures would end up looking like? If I didn't care about my name & reputation and was only shooting for a paycheck, I may consider doing that. But I actually have pride in my work and want to maintain a level of quality so with that in mind, I think its better for me to process my work and send the client retouched & finished shots when possible.

stable be nice for sure... found putting my apps on the D drive and using a different drive for the bridge DB really cleared up most of my issues with stability... and then deleting the DB every week or so helps as well.. honestly haven't had a crash since I went to win8 though bridge still does creepy stuff like not opening all the files in ACR at times... I just copy the files to a new folder on as different drive and issue solved... I have no idea what goes on with Macs though

I figured one big plus for the cloud was the ability to share creative choices.... oh well not for everybody.. . I tried to get the editors that get my work to run the batches but they all use Asee Dsee

Gonna wait and see.
Adobe will eventually get you though, camera upgrades and raw processing.
Anybody know if they will only offer this solution or have discs you can buy as well?

Spoke with a video guy about it last week he was looking forward said Final Cut was not supporting the pro version anymore some apple guys were gonna go premiere...said he liked it cause he only had to pay for when he used it, but did say he liked having the books when you buy the disks.

Why is everybody arguing anyway? I dont get it, we all work in the same industry. Sometimes I dont even want to post here anymore. I left for 2 years cause it was bad.

Actually that's a good point, specially since 90% of people, specially ones working on web graphics, never use Photoshop for what it was designed for: print graphics and a large majority use it to add captions to cat pictures instead.

This arguably helped to popularize Photoshop so much that it became a verb.

Photoshop was created to handle graphics destined for print, part of the original Holy Trinity: QuarkXpress, Illustrator and Photoshop, so its CMYK colour separation capacities are simply wasted for someone working strictly on web graphics.

Thing is over the years I spoken to Models and they all have shot everybody and I have never heard a bad thing about anybody except 1 photographer from the Adult industry and he went on to bigger things, so if I have to figure if you guys are still in Adult you must be nice in real life.

There will be no more disks. I am a pc user myself, but I know several Mac guys who switched back to Adobe & Premiere Pro specifically a couple of years or so ago when Apple had that mis-step with Final Cut X and Adobe started creating a new Mac version of Premiere Pro after a few years of not having one. My same friend who switched back to Adobe for video editing on Mac a while back loves the Creative Cloud since as a heavy Photoshop & Dreamweaver user he enjoys the integration with Premiere Pro, After Effects and a couple of the other programs. That's also one of the reasons I like Adobe for pc- the way the apps can pass files seamlessly between Photoshop & Premiere or Encore for example.
