Where do you buy your meat?

The local supermarkets around here mostly suck. One in particular can't even put together a good Italian sausage.

I admit it though, Costco has a pretty good butcher. Good tasting steaks for grilling.

I`m lucky, most of it comes off the farms in the valley I live. Or the local butcher, who sources from about a 50 mile radius.

I do my own from start to finish

28 day aged dexter and highland

Local butchers are great but stay away from the plastic wrapped supermarket stuff if you want quality

Walmart.

No kidding. My wife has it all figured out, where to buy the best stuff at the best prices. When it comes to meat and fish, Walmart is always the best.

Local outfit here called The Carver's Knife. The owner raises his own cattle and chickens, all non-injected and free range. He also buys a lot of local stuff like locally-raised bison meat, pork direct from local pig farmers, etc. Their ground beef is out of this world, and if bought by the 10 lb lot it's quite reasonably priced.

My total bill is a bit heftier than if I went to, say, Supervalue or costco, but the quality is far better which makes it worth it, for me anyway.

My advice: Find a good local butcher and then stick with it like gold.

"Many years ago I complained to a local Wal Mart because the ground round was red on the outside and brown on the inside. The butcher came out and told me it was because Wal Mart made them put dye into the meat to make it look better in the package and the meat was actually the same color in the center as it comes out of the machine. Then he added that if I thought that was bad just wait until they got rid of all the butchers. Well they did get rid of them and the results are meat not fit to feed my dog."

"Went to a BBQ over Labor Day where they served charcoal grilled Walmart steaks. I was very hungry and they sure smelled good. I tried to chew them for a few minutes but made little progress; it was very rubbery and had very little flavor. I guess what I was smelling was the charcoal. I would have been better off eating the charcoal."

and that's without going into the meat glue they use...

Costco here, between the GF and I we eat 18lbs of chicken/beef a week. Cant go wrong with their butcher section, even their fish is great.

I expect it varies the same as here...

If I go to Morrison's up north the meat is good - Here in the south its awful.....

I use the Halal butchers here for chicken and lamb - I am a bit put off by the way they do things, but it tastes so damn good...

The pork in the UK is awful - After eating good Spanish pork I just don't bother buying it here.....

I have a market within walking distance of my place so I have a few butchers to get what i need for the most part. Huge difference. I'll still hit other grocery stores and grab something on sale but the quality is noticeably different. I pay a little more for it at the market but well worth the quality. Costco I rarely find deals that suit me and i don't find it as fresh as a regular butcher. better than a regular grocery store though.

example stewing beef. I get it from the butcher and i can cut through it with my knife like butter. I get the same cut at the regular grocery store i have to saw that shit and slow cook it for hours to make it edible.. heh

A halal market on Venice or the Japanese markets like marukai or mitsuwa. Japanese are picky, picky, picky when it comes to any food. Best place for vegetables too. Decent prices and grown on organic Japanese farms locally. Half the price of wholefoods etc.

I'd be surprised if anyone from the EU would say anything but their favorite local butcher.

I lived in Germany from 88 to 92 and had a couple of favorites. They'd cut it on the spot for you.

It really depends on what type of meat it is and what it will be used for. Ground beef, WGAF - but if it's a steak or something I'll go to Whole Foods. Tony's Meats for special occasions.

Local Grocer for some
Whole Foods for most
Tony's Meats for rare things

Buy direct from a farmer. If you buy your meat from a grocery store the meat is already about 10-14 days old.

You guys in Norway have good caribou. I was up there in the mid-80s for military ops and we ate at one of the junior ranks mess kitchens. Fresh "melk" every morning, and caribou steak for supper.

For the most part, a local butcher. His bacon is less expensive than a supermarket, as is his ground beef (if bought in bulk). I am experimenting with raising chickens this year, Have 20 going for slaughter in about 5 weeks. You can taste the difference in the eggs, so I'm sure the meat will be the same.

The odd time I will use a supermarket if something is decent quality and good value, but with the amount of (seasoning) that they are doing now to meat, it's becoming less enticing to shop there. I keep trying to convince the wife to trade our horses for cattle, but so far, its falling on deaf ears.

The problem with buying direct from a farmer, is that everything will be frozen. There's little chance of buying fresh since they will generally slaughter at only certain times of the year. Nothing wrong with frozen meat, but the texture will be different, and it sucks when you think, I want steak tonight, and it won't be defrosted in time.

Also I hope my beef is 21-28 days old

Usually go for whole organic chickens, bone in chicken parts or pork chops so Wegmans supermarket is fine. Their ground beef is poor quality IMHO though. Super fatty even if you try for 90% lean, get an empty can ready to pour it all off.

EC, do you have any hutterite colonies where you are? Those people always have meats and all manner of homemade foodstuffs for sale. Their chickens and eggs especially are terrific. All-natural too, and not too pricey.

If you develop a rapport with them as a good repeat customer they are often ammenable to cutting you a discount.

I don't think we have any Hutterites in Quebec. Seems most of them are in Manitoba. Nor have I seen Mennonites around here ever.

Yes, once you leave the city you can't throw a rock without hitting a hutterite colony in Manitoba. They're damn handy to have around though, not only for all the foodstuffs I mentioned above, perogies, cabbage rolls, pies, etc, but they also provide housecleaning service. For like sixty bucks two or three of their women will show up and absolutely clean the shit out of your house in 3-4 hours.

I didn't think they were much into Quebec but thought I'd ask.

Is that perchance the "Schwan" man? I'm familiar with this. My late aunt from Minnesota used to have the Schwan man come by her house every month and she'd fill her freezer with all manner of frozen stuff.... lasagna's, burger patties, steaks, chicken, you name it.

We have a similar place here, M & M Meat Shops, but they don't deliver.

I get some from Trader Joe's, some from Wegmans (our grocery chain) and some from the butcher at the public market.

All organic at this point.

We get our beef from a local farmer http://www.stevesfarm.com/steveston/. CHicken I get from Costco or the local grocery store. Fish we try to come into through connections
