NFL Franchises For London and Los Angeles

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/98...nfl-wants-both

LONDON -- Roger Goodell wants the NFL to return to Los Angeles and he wants to bring the league to Europe on a permanent basis.

In no particular order.

Speaking at a forum for European NFL fans Saturday on the eve of the 49ers-Jaguars game at Wembley Stadium, Goodell was asked by a fan about going back to L.A. and where it ranks on the league's wish list compared to putting a team in London.

"It doesn't matter," Goodell said.

"I'd love to be back in Los Angeles," Goodell said. "But it has to be done the right way, we have to do it successfully. ...

"I want both (London and L.A.), but it doesn't matter which one is first."

The NFL has not had an NFL franchise in Los Angeles since 1995 when both the Rams and the Raiders relocated.

If the NFL puts a team in London, it would be the only American professional sports league to have a team based in Europe.

There has been talk that there could perhaps be a Super Bowl held in London. However, Goodell said Saturday that will likely only happen if there is a franchise in London because the Super Bowl is played in cities where the NFL has teams based.

Goodell is a huge proponent of playing in London. There will be two regular-season games played in London this season and three in 2014. The games are wildly popular and have been sellouts.

"You are proving you are worthy of a franchise," Goodell told the European fans.

Meanwhile, Goodell said there could be a female official working in the league by next season. The league had a female official work in the preseason.

a christchurch team in the nrl could be interesting. its rugby league for me more than rugby union. last season in the nrl was an absolute shocker, illegal tackles here there and everywhere but just totally let go.

It seems that a team from London would be at a big disadvantage due to the travel time, especially when they need to play on the West Coast.

I think the London team would be in America all the time and fly to London for a game.

LA sucks ass in so many ways and that's why teams let the first time.
I wouldn't bet too much money on a return to LA.

Can someone explain why LA still does not have NFL team? I mean smaller cities and town has them, why not LA? It does not make sense for an outsider like me.

Because it sucked ass for the two teams they had...{If you count when the Raiders were the LA Raiders.}

Let me rephrase - why did it suck? Even smaller towns have NFL teams, how come bigger and possibly richer LA can not hold a team? Only Mexicans in LA and they do not care about handegg?

Travel won't be a problem, they can use the bye week and long road trips to solve that. What they can't solve are the tax rates.
Good luck attracting top free agents when their income tax would be double or triple what they would pay on the same contract in Florida, Seattle or Texas...

Moron, what do I have to do with it? I am merely asking for reasons why it fails in major city like LA and does not fail in small towns all over the country.

How should I know how does hand egg league work if I am not even from the states.
On top of that - is concessions illegal in LA and legal everywhere else? Why small towns are able to do this and major city is not? Thats my question.
And even more on top of that it looks like concessions are just a small part of revenue, according to forbes:

Concessions are a much smaller revenue stream for NFL teams due to only eight regular season home games

there are several reason imo why no nfl in la la.

1. lack of a decent, not even good, stadium, led both the raiders and rams to complain that was the reason they were losers and then be incentivized to move the teams to oakland and st. louis due to big dollar, i think al davis got $50million for moving the raiders to oakland

2. still no decent stadium

3. the usc trojans are big here, real big, ucla not so much but still big.

4. too many entertainment options for your dollar here, basketball, baseball, hockey, amusment parks, the beach, skiing, hollywood. etc. that's a lot of competition for discretionary spending

that said, there will be a new nfl stadium built in dtla starting very soon!

i don't believe there has been any london team yet, the league is going on the fact that the games sellout over there year after year. and prolly some serious math as well, it's a billion $+ deal to even get started setting-up a london nfl franchise, so i would wager someone(s) at the nfl has crunched a # on this.

doesn't mean it will work or that a football is shaped liked an egg (it's not) but certainly smart people have examined the opportunity and goodell is going on that.

It seems to me that people would take one game a year as an excuse to travel to London for something fun and exciting to do. Could London support eight games a year?

WTF are you talking about? I was merely interested why NFL teams can be held in small towns and major city is not able to hold it. Whats wrong with being curious about that?
Or are you one of those ignorant Americans who is not interested about anything that is not in the US? In that case I understand that you are surprised that other people are curious about many things that happens in other countries.

personally, i don't get it at all. i'm very much assuming the smarter people on this are goodell's crew that is claiming the viability of it.

another astonishing part of it to me is this is just, from what i've read, a precurser to the real goal- asia. i've read this is all sorting out how to internationally expand into the really big markets.

And I told you why and you interpreted that to be hot dog sales.

Business concessions include stadium naming rights, lease deals, etc etc. Not just sales from the concession stand.

Yes and Stadium naming rights in a city like LA would not be cheaper than in a small town = more $$$ selling the name.
Plus, like Forbes article suggest, concessions is not most important part of revenue, plus pretty much similar in every team.
Someone already posted good reasons and this one was not even in the list.

The Forbes article was talking about concession (beer) sales you daft idiot.

And it doesnt matter if its more money selling the stadium name if the team sees none of that money, get it?

Those are the reasons but with California's financial problems how does LA build a 1 Billion dollar stadium? Not like there's much public demand for a new stadium and NFL team in LA.

Jacksonville ain't long for the NFL.

imo, the only way for a team here is via a very wealthy ownership group. while i do think all the reasons i listed are valid, the fact is there is insane amounts of wealth here. i bet that 1 person could pick up the phone and get a stadium funded. maybe a couple calls, lolz, but heck look at how much cash private investors put together recently to buy the dodgers. dang. that deal came with a ton of land too, plenty of space for a stadium, that part is complicated atm due to mccourt's divorce but i believe the cash is there.

so basically, a stadium would not be funded via bond initiatives and such that have typically been a big part of the funding, it would be all private. imo.

I'm a bit torn to this debate, because yes it would be pretty awesome to have a UK team, however I don't see many of the UK fans changing their favorite team to support it. I know I wouldn't...

I'm curious. Exactly what London-based NFL teams are you talking about?

NFL Europa was a bunch of crappy players that couldn't make it in the NFL, with a ton of difference in the game.

Yet these London games have been selling out in hours if not minutes, every game. Packed to the rafters with people who supposedly have no interest in NFL.

Sorry, there seems to be a HUGE interest in it over there. Goodell sees it.

That said, if I were from Hawaii I might be a bit pissed that a remote locale like London is being considered and not Honolulu. Not a big enough market you say? Bullshit. 1.4 million people in Hawaii, over 400k of them in Honolulu (and surrounding environs). And football is huge over there. London and not there? Yep I'd be pissed.

I went to a couple of the NFL games in London and there is a decent number of fans. It will be interesting to see if they can maintain a full time team though since that team.

You can tell the last time they made a world push because the number of mid to late 30 something men I know from outside the States that are big '85 Bears fans is remarkable.

You have to go into a lottery system months before to even have the right to have the chance to buy the tickets.

Considering that an expansion team is going to suck for at least 3 - 5 years, it will be very hard for it to become instantly popular in England. The Houston Texans are the last NFL expansion team, and while they have improved a lot over the years, and actually considered to be an elite team as of late (even though they suck this year) they are still a long way away from winning a Super Bowl. London "fans" would have to be very patient. And with no American Football history in that country, I don't see it happening.

I look forward to the reactions of the natives if they try to brand themselves as football in the UK and not American Football or just NFL.

Since the NFL season is so short, doesn't it piss of the fans of teams who have a "home" game in London ?

I know i'd be pissed if i was missing out on a game. Especially with so few home games anyway. I assume the price of the season tickets is changed accordingly ??

Dunno about that, I watched about 3-5 mins of the game and there were huge gaps in the crowd filled with advertising hordings

They pick the worst fucking games to play over there, so it's no surprise. I'll be shocked the day they ever play a game with two elite teams.
