If you have good content, you should absolutely email members updates newsletters. I tested this at Playboy UK, and everyone told me I was mental mailing members. because it would remind them they are paying for porn!

However, it increased retention massively.

.

I see it like this

Paying members are VIP's that should never be contacted or hassled unless absolutely necessary.

Each email to non members is one possible reason for them to subscribe. Each email to members is one possible reason for them to cancel.

....and yet Amazon, Netflix, Dominos, Best Buy, Capital One, Ticketmaster and most other websites and online/offline retailers will contact you by email on some sort of interval (daily, weekly, monthly, promotional/sale) during the month without you buying anything even if you have a membership. They ask you for your email upon check out at the register.

So which of the two think have it wrong? Adult pornographers, or major business chains?

This is the difference between a businessman and hobbyist IMHO. I am not faulting people for choosing to run their business how they see fit as the choice does not impact me either way. You obviously need to follow can-spam and if they opt-out, you remove them. I am just saying, look at any other major chain and how they do their email with members and customers. If you're not engaging them, then it's money you're leaving on the table.

Porn sites should follow the email strategies of the mainstream multi-billion dollar companies you named above, all in completely different industries? You paint with a very broad brush.

Just one small example. Capital One will not piss off a girlfriend/boyfriend you're having dinner with on a Friday night when the email notification comes in while eating and they want to see what it is.

From adult: Likely an image of a naked girl/guy with promo text "MEMBERS AREA UPDATE" etc, etc.

Capital One: Increase your credit line.

I'm good. Everyone does what they want, it's what keeps things interesting
