So, what scary ass movies are out there ??

I mean proper scary. None of the usual bullshit that they try and pass off as a horror flick these days.

Seen far too many that make me laugh more at how bad they are than actually being scary.

Shoot !!

scary is so subjective though, what I find scary are things that seem more real--which is very rare now. Most horror movie lovers like shit jumping out at you every 5 mins. The things that are popular now, like vampires and zombies aren't even horror movies anymore just action movies with monsters.

You're saying Annabelle didn't do it for you? :D

I get it though, I'm a tough sell on the horror as well.

True.

The shit jumping out constant doesn't make a movie scary. Infact it suggests it relies on only that to give the impression that it's scary when really it isn't in the slightest. You are just reacting to a loud noise etc which is standard reaction for everyone.

Scary should be one that keeps you shitting your pants AFTER the movie is done...

Occulus was pretty good. I wouldn't call it mega-scary, but it was one of the most clever horror movies I've seen in a long time.

Insidious is scary. But as Glen said, it's all subjective.

I like slow burning, creepy horror without all of the in-your-face jump scares.

There's this Australian movie called Lake Mungo, which is one of those found-footage fake documentary things. If you turn off the lights and your phone and just give it your uninterrupted attention, it will creep the fuck out of you. They got the tone just right, and the acting is so natural.

It's a well put together movie you won't forget.

I found the original Spanish "Rec" had me on the edge of my seat. Pandorum was really good for sci-fi action/horror. And Rigor Mortis was not so much scary as just a good vampire story.

IMO [Rec] (2007) is the best horror film ever made, it has to be watched alone in the dark with a quality surround sound system. The sound was outstanding in that film!

[Rec]² (2009) is also outstanding!
Shutter (2004) is a very creep Thai horror film, it's excellent!

As mentioned The Descent & The Conjuring are excellent! James Wan has directed a lot of quality horror films in the past decade.

The [Rec] movies are some of my favorites. All three of them.

The US versions weren't awful, but they weren't great either.

The V/H/S flicks have been pretty good so far.

How could I forget Descent? (The Brit one). That's super solid! Still gives me the heebie-jeebies! )

If you like the "found footage" genre, The Bay is pretty gripping. Pontypool is an interesting restricted-space kind of movie with a strange premise.

I thought Insidious was pretty damn good. I liked how it was all horror with virtually no visual effects. I was already into the movie, but when the old lady put on the gas mask, holy shit - I don't know why but I really, really got into from that point forward. Insidious II was also pretty good but not as good as the first one. I didn't see Occulus yet but heard it was decent.

One of the best Creepy / Horrow movies I've seen in a long time is TRIANGLE, about a group of people out on a boat. Well acted, Mind-bending SMART movie that promises little in the preview, but delivers a whole lot more.

If you want the evil/devil/possessions type of horror, try The Conjuring, this movie haunted me for a good month.

I liked the first 2/3 of Insidious, it was pretty damn scary, but then it just got stupid at the end.

Occulus is very much like Triangle. It starts off slow, but once it gets going there's a few "oh shit" mind bending moments.

Another one like that is Devil's Pass. The last few minutes will change everything you just watched for the previous 90 minutes.

Shoot !!
There is ONLY ONE horror film that is the ultimate experience in true chilling horror.

The Exorcist.

No, not the washed out, scene deleted, audio deleted version you see at night on some lame cable channel with commercials....

I'm talking about getting the BluRay or DVD, and watching it on a nice large HD screen, with big booming speakers, at night, ALONE (if you have the guts) or with somebody that doesn't talk during a home movie... (light a joint also if you have the guts)....

And prepare for a most excellent adventure into the mind of the Devil himself.

Not only is it a great horror film, it's shot well, has great dialogue, acting, great editing, music, reality based effects (no digital crap), and sound. You will hear sounds and voices coming out of your speakers you've never heard before on the TV version. It will blow you away. If you have surround sound, prepare to be totally fucking freaked out.

The Exorcist is by far the best horror film ever made. It reaches deep into the mind and when it's over, you won't be able to get certain images and thoughts out of your head. Even if you are not religious, it will get you. If you are religious, you are in for one true mind fucking, with no condoms.

It's so fantastic, some people can't even handle it and their defense is to laugh to brush over what they just saw, and hope for a quick commercial. They laugh because it's a human response to being so scared. Watch it alone, IF you think the movie is funny, and see if you laugh. I doubt you will make it thru the film alone. Within 10 mins of the horror scenes, you'll be flipping on the lights.

There are numerous horrifying scenes in this film, too intense to write here, but... one comes to mind, when young "Regan" is possessed by the devil, she is in her bed, fucking herself with a cross, blood all over her pajamas, screaming in a low pitched devil's voice: "Let Jesus fuck you!!!... let Jesus fuck you!!!" Absolutely horrifying images.

Good luck and enjoy.

If you are ever in London, go and see Ghost Stories. It is the single most frightening thing I've been too. It's written and directed by Andy Nyman, a magician who directs Derren Brown's live shows and is SHIT A BRICK frightening.

It's not a movie, but if you have a PS4 download the free game "P.T."

Keep a extra pair of underwear handy.

Both are good films. Scary, needs to keep you on the edge of the chair & you know it's good when your toes curl & you begin lifting your feet up

The Exorcist was also based on real exorcisms.

But yeah, what most say is what is true.. most so-called scary movies are nothing but startling reveals and music cues. Fine for a date, or to cool off in summer (from sweat if you break out into one).

I'm immune to jump scares. The last time I jumped at a jump scare was The Eye (the original, the "why are you in my chair" scene) Nearly soiled myself.

A movie that wasn't "scary" in the traditional sense but really stuck with me for days on end was Session 9. Slow build and a lot of tension. It has you expecting a jump or some gore, but instead, weaves its way under your skin. Not recommended for those with short attention spans or expecting balls to the wall action...

I will second that. A very creepy movie.

Here's another "found footage" film by the guy who did Blair Witch but this time featuring Bigfoot. It's not out yet but it won the Audience Award at SXSW film festival this year:

One of the all time greats. Was watching it today on cable --- it's been making the rounds on the movie channels for a couple of months, and I always stop to watch it when I'm channel surfing.

You're Next was awesome. You think it's another one of "those" movies, but then you realize it's much smarter than that.

The Grudge (2004)

The Ring and Quarantine were pretty good too.

Agree about Session 9. The ending blew me away. It resonated w/ me for days after I saw it. Psychological horror.

Here's a horror recommendation.

Pulse (Kairo) 2001
a JHorror flick
