We Survive Death, Major Scientific Study Proves

Have scientists proved there is life after death? Research into 'near-death' experiences reveals awareness may continue even after the brain has shut down

- Scientists conducted study of those who suffered cardiac arrests

- Nearly 40% of those who survived described 'awareness' during time when they were clinically dead before their hearts were restarted

- One man recalled leaving his body and watching his own resuscitation

Consciousness may continue even after death, scientists now believe.

Research into 'near-death' experiences has revealed that awareness and the mind may continue to exist after the brain has ceased to function and the body is clinically dead.

Scientists at the University of Southampton conducted a four-year study of more than 2,000 patients who had suffered cardiac arrests.

The research spanned cases at 15 hospitals in the UK, U.S. and Austria.

The findings revealed nearly 40 per cent of those who survived described some kind of 'awareness' during the time when they were clinically dead before their hearts were restarted.

It sounds like we should change our definition of death, rather than assume there's a "life after death." If someone's brain is still working even after their heart has stopped, I would conclude that they are alive until all brain activity has ended. It makes a good headline, but I don't think this proves anything beyond the fact that some people's brains are still somewhat active after the heart has stopped.

Actually everyone's brain is still active for another few minutes, after the heart has stopped. The brain only dies when it runs out of oxygen, which is what happens when the heart no longer pumps blood to it. However, the oxygen doesn't run out immediately, thus the delay.

It really doesn't say "we survive death" it says 40 people out of 2000 self reported actual awareness, though as the article states there is no proof. The "it merits further study" translates as "we deserve a grant to keep our jobs studying stuff like this, which isn't all that hard".

Take for instance the charger to my laptop, the green light on the transformer remains on for quite a few seconds, after I pull the pug from the outlet. So it is possible, for a similar experience involving the heart and brain

Exactly... that's the explanation of this situation. Wonder why those scientists who did the study didn't come up with that... Makes me think of them as stupid or just running an agenda...

Supposedly when you dream, there's no temporal measurement. This is why when you hear a sound while you're sleeping, you can create an entire dream scenario to bring that sound into the dream. That movie Inception explored the idea pretty well....a second in the waking world could be years inside your head because it's happening instantly, and forever at the same time.

So in theory, you could have a dream of an entire other life at the moment of your death. Maybe this life is a dream and you're actually some Native American in the year 1600 being eaten by a bear.

So why hasn't anyone tried pumping oxygen to a person's brain when their heart stops using a machine? Then scan the brain for activity for a few days and see if its still going.

This seems like the next logical test in extending human life beyond the body. But as far as I know, nobody is trying this.

The brain is a fairly sensitive mechanism - think of it this way, your car works by turning fuel into controlled combustion, which is fire. but if you pump a bunch of fire into your car you probably won't get the result you want.

Heart transplants require blood substitute and often result in "pump head", like you see in bill clinton, where he clearly is not as "on" as he was. So the method to deliver oxygen to brain cells would have to be more complex than we currently have.

Duh. How can you see without your eyes?

If my brain was dying it'd probably shut off all the non essential parts of itself and release a bunch of dopamine and other chemicals.

We all think our memory is in our brain when it is not. You will have to read Karl Lashley and Karl Pribam work to understand it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl_Lashley, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl_H._Pribram

We all think our body is made of physical material but when we study quantum mechanics we understand we're all made of energy.

Such debate about life after death or not is pointless. I still wonder why some care there's life after death and the others want to explain them there's none.
Doing this we look like believers trying to convert others to our religion.

Jakub, didn't know you moved away from ACC. We're actually in the same business as it appears now.

I'll keep an eye on your stuff maybe we could do some business together in time. We're in different areas.
Do you operate from within the EU, or outside?

Quite frankly I'd be astonished if this wasn't the case. If you believe in evolution then we are continually evolving, why wouldn't it be possible for "some" humans to evolve a conscience that exists beyond the death of the body.
