Z.COM Sells For Almost $7 Million USD

Sorry if it's been posted already but I didn't hear about this one and I don't know how it escaped the mainstream news since it's a pretty big ticket domain sale for recent times. Interesting that it was bought by a Japanese company - I wonder if they wanted to binge spend some of their yen cash before it got devalued by further QE measures.

I'm not sure if there is any logic in that proposition or even in what i'm suggesting. Anyhow, here's the craik:

GMO Internet Reveals Re-branding Plans; Z.Com Coming Soon

Z.com Sold for Nearly $6.8 Million | DomainInvesting.com

But the reality is that there are other hot opportunities out there right now like domains were back at the time of the land grab. The question is: "are you smart enough to find them?"

They got it for a good price. IMO it's worth a lot more, especially in the right hands.

Paypal owns x.com unless they have sold it recently, I used that address for years to go to their website.

Because you don't have the intellect nor the capital for it. It's the same reason you didn't buy Apple stock, didn't buy Bitcoins, and won't buy the next thing. You are just going to sit on the sidelines, watching opportunity after opportunity pass you by ... and thinking you're being clever by making fun of those who are cashing in.

That's how much sex.com sold for about 10 years ago. Not sure if it's changed ownership since, but I bet the guys who bought it back then would've been way better off buying z.com for the same price.

You'd probably be betting the wrong way. Sex.com is a completely different kettle of fish.

Capital values aside, give me the choice (without knowing the amount of commerce happening at either URL) and I would surmise that sex.com receives VASTLY higher traffic of the kind known as "type-in traffic" because its a single word and descriptive of an entire industry. Such traffic converts incredibly well to sales because the owner knows what the people typing in the URL are looking for and can serve the relevant product.

Z.com is a fantastic URL but it's much less clear as to what visitors (if any) would be looking for.

Sex.com would have to be valued based on the capital value plus a multi-year calculation of the revenue generated by URL.

By the way, if memory serves me, I think sex.com was most recently purchased at around $12m in or around 2006.

Those guys are still crying in their beers about that purchase. They never broke even on it.

Well I wont talk about capital values because the beauty is in the eye of the buyer... but in terms of revenue, im pretty sure sex.com would be doing better on purely type-in traffic revenue even in a post "crappy adult industry" world.

I'm no expert but agree with him.. Z.com gives no clue about content so there would be no reason anyone would ever type that in besides sheer curiosity. Sex.com, Porn.com, etc make money straight off the bat. Z.com Could be a great marketing opportunity for a huge company that starts with Z.. there is a big clothing retailer called Zara, for example. Or a new car make that starts with Z etc. It sounds mysterious so could market it in anticipation of some big unveiling.. I am suprised some rich arab sheik didn't buy it since many arabic names and company names start with Z and they are a sucker for classy looking shit.. web addresses, sequential phone numbers, etc.

Making money off the bat doesn't mean turning a profit on the buying price. But yes, z.com is obviously not a domain for anybody. Yet as I said above, in the right hands it could be turned into a goldmine quite fast, much faster than sex.com or porn.com, given the proper marketing resources and effort.

Too bad I called both of them long before in threads here, including FB from $19 to almost $80. It's all there for the searching. It's not "hindsight" if you're continually right, before it happens.

Probably but every year high value domain names are selling for higher prices as they all find an end use, the supply is ever more thin. I note that most of the big sales in the top 30 here are industry descriptive dot com, with the exception of fb, yp, ig, korea, tom and a few others. However, I'm surprised they don't sell at higher prices considering where the high end real estate is right now which is has much more supply. Property.com I believe went for $750k - it was stolen at that price.

Also, knowing what we know here about the collapse in value of the online industry Sex.com doesn't look so hot.

But marijuana is becoming legalized in the USA, if online gambling was to become legal in the USA then I think Poker.com would be a hugely valuable domain and could even top the list because its so focused and yet such a big industry if you look at leaders like PokerStars.
