You know what sucks about being in adult industry?

No one really gives a shit how well or how awful you do. If you're doing good, you're making easy money, if you're doing shitty no one cares anyway.

Who do you brag to when you reach your long time goals??? Who congratulates you? Who gets excited for you?

Other Webmasters who are your friends and who understand the daily struggle, the rise and fall of both effort and profits, and (ultimately) your "real world" friends who have seen you go through Hell and back.

Or, no one. Shrug.

Why brag? What's the purpose?

Paying the bills, buying the toys and enjoying vacations in the Caribbean - far better substitute than the need to impress someone who's opinion I don't give two shits about anyways.

I'm too old to feel the need to hear "Atta' boy."

(and as said above - it's not 'easy money' - especially if you're a content producer and program owner)

It sucks right? I'm like oh whoopie, a goal, who really cares. Absolutely no one.

I don't generally talk about "work" with my real life friends because what is there to talk about really? Shit they have no clue about. Most of them hate their job anyway, so I feel like an asshole talking mine up.

Well because you work so hard, it's nice to be proud of yourself isn't it?

When do we stop being proud of ourselves? It seems to be once you reach a certain level of money celebrating your success (aside from buying stuff and vacations) becomes non existent.

This is pretty much true but I'd much rather make money selling adult entertainment than being a lawyer, dentist and in many cases doctors. They are predators, charging people over inflated prices just because they can as part of a cartel.

Who wouldn't if they could do it and be successful. You just get to a point where no one really cares how good you're doing and hitting those higher goals that once seemed so far away are just ignored.

I don't HAVE to eat Ramen, but I love it!!!!! lol

It's not really about what anyone thinks, I know my people are proud. There's just no one who shares that real excitement I guess.

I lost my GM this year, and I think that's what I'm missing because this is the first year in 15 I have felt this way.

Hey sorry for your loss man. This time of year will make anyone a little...well, you know. End of the year is great tho for looking back and, more importantly, looking forward to new Goals.

That's the thing about Goals: once you reach them you need to replace them real quick otherwise you feel like you are losing momentum and enthusiasm. But at some point you have to "own" the Goal you just reached, realizing you are not the same person you were that SET that Goal. The journey, hard work and perspective of achieving that Goal has changed you. Owning who you are NOW, and being proud of yourself, is how you keep going.

Have a wife or girlfriend? Does she know how hard you work? Save your pennies, go to some Webmaster Shows, you will meet plenty of people who feel exactly as you do. Contact me on ICQ or by email if you need a friend. I don't have a GM anymore, either.

Just get through this next month and you will feel different and better in January. Last thing: doing what you do is fuck more better than working in a shoe store. Just remember that. LOL

I actually had a falling out with a friend for several years over something like this.

I started building adult sites and was getting to where I was doing well enough that it was all I did. After a year or so of working for myself a friend asked me if I would meet his kids when they got off the bus at his house and watch them for an hour or so until either he or is wife got home (they both were stuck working late). Always happy to help a friend, I was glad to do it.

One time turned into two times and pretty soon I was going over there 3 times per week. Each time took 2-3 hours out of my day. They never asked if I was okay with doing this, they just assumed I was their new babysitter.

So one day, after a few weeks of me being there multiple times per week they both came home later than normal. I then found out that they had actually left work early and had spent the day shopping, going to lunch and going to see a movie. They didn't bother telling me this or that they would be late so I was kind of pissed off. Then his wife said something like, "Having you has made our lives so much easier." I told them I didn't know how much more of this I could do and she said, "It isn't like you have a real job."

I went on to explain that I was working 10-12 hours a day at least. Every hour I spent at their house was another hour that night I had work. I don't get sick or vacation days. I don't work, I don't get paid. She actually got offended and stormed out of the room and I went home.

A few days later I called him up because we had talked about seeing a new movie that was coming out. He said, "Can you find time in your precious schedule to see it?" It really pissed me off.

We didn't talk for about five years. Occasionally I would see him at parties or other things were multiple friends were, but things were very cold between us. Then he started his own business and suddenly realized for himself just how hard it was and how much work it took. He actually called me up and apologized.

The moral of the story is that if you work for yourself most people think you don't really work and money just rains from the sky and into your pockets.

Which I guess is what is being said here.

Once you are 'relaxed' your financials are sorted, you can afford to work on stuff you want to, not what you have to.

Then it continues to be fun 'working' again - and then you can put it all on auto pilot or delegate for however many months you want/need a year in your vacation home.

That's true.

Most friends over the years who know my 'other business' tend to wrongly assume it's easy money simply because it's "porn". Unless we get into a conversation about it and I take the time to give a few details...they're not aware of the sheer amount of work and long hours invested in a ma-&-pa operation.

Exactly!

A classic example of - "Unless you've walked a mile in those shoes......."

I'll bet that apology he gave you provided a great deal of satisfaction at the time.

Everyone thinks being a Webmaster is easy money because they see us having breakfast at noon. They don't realize we were up til 5 am WORKING.

True. Same for me. Any time someone takes the time to talk to me about the back end of what I do, then they also realize there's a lot more than they thought. Most however just say something like "ohhhh that's interesting" and leave it at that.

Others who really can't handle knowing what I do, I tell them I'm a photographer which is my pleasure.

It's sad but true. I'm glad he realized how hard you work...and I'm sure that was a little justifying for you. Did you need it? No, but it was nice to be acknowledged.

Good point. Someone in the startup community recently was enthused that I've had 3 of my projects funded by angels and VC's. They asked what they were, and I explained a few of them were in adult. They changed their whole tune, said they were a bit jealous, but that "it was cheating". Like it was too easy.

heh. suckerrrrr.

Same here I was at a VC/Angel mixer and one of the other angels asked what other line of businesses am I involved in and his impression was "that's where the money is" and kept saying "easy money easy money"

Sounds like you can't communicate your success to your friends/family, so perhaps you should create a new circle related to the industry, go to events, shows, etc.

I've been and am involved in both mainstream companies/startups and adult and I will tell you...no one. I limit exposure and have a very small circle of friends/family who I share success with when it come to anything related adult.

It's human nature to want to reach out and share your success, just build a different circle one that would understand and would appreciate it. Adult industry people are much more fun, where else can grown adults act so juvenile and get away with it.
