When you have two antiviruses installed at the same time, they often conflict and leave holes in the coverage. uninstall one of them. You should only have one installed at the same time.

Too many conflicts of interest out there really, used to work in IT myself, there are some people who you need to protect, for sure.

That's fairly subjective and depending on the reviews one reads/trusts. I've tried a lot of them, and I think many of them have their pros and cons.

That said, having a good hardware firewall along with your router is a positive thing.

And then disable all internet connections when you are away from your computer, sleeping, etc. is a good idea as well.

The second is because the first did not catch it anyway. The adaware anti was not installed until after the first had run multiple times.

pornguy, assuming you are using a command line prompt with Windows, the first thing I think I would look at is to determine just what is making all of the connections you notice. Typing "netstat -b" at the command prompt, for example, will show you the executable being used.

Additionally, you can use netstat to determine the port used as well other pertinent information that you can use to search for clues/answers on Google if it's not apparent on the terminal display output.

Not sure what else to suggest, but to me, the very first thing you need to do is determine, and isolate, exactly what is causing the connections.

Here's a decent site for NetStat command line switches and what each one does.

I thought the DOS version of Norton Utilities, even up to version 8.0, was pretty decent. Personally, I think Symantec/Norton jumped the shark with Norton Navigator (I think that was the name) -- it was their attempt to control the GUI/Desktop of Windows and replace the default Windows Explorer.

Everything they've produced since then has been really bloated (my opinion).

Frankly, for basic maintenance for most people, I like the "Manager" series of software from Yamicsoft. I use Windows 8 Manager pretty regularly these days as part of my maintenance routines.

Honestly, I think everyone who works in the online environment should know what is OK and what is not OK to click on or visit. As well as know when you shouldn't have clicked on something and immediately go into survival mode with scans and removals and whatnot.
