It's going to be tough to hate Republicans now

Congress quietly ends federal government's ban on medical marijuana - LA Times

Tucked deep inside the 1,603-page federal spending measure is a provision that effectively ends the federal government's prohibition on medical marijuana and signals a major shift in drug policy.

The bill's passage over the weekend marks the first time Congress has approved nationally significant legislation backed by legalization advocates. It brings almost to a close two decades of tension between the states and Washington over medical use of marijuana.

Under the provision, states where medical pot is legal would no longer need to worry about federal drug agents raiding retail operations. Agents would be prohibited from doing so.

"This is a victory for so many," said the measure's coauthor, Republican Rep. Dana Rohrabacher of Costa Mesa. The measure's approval, he said, represents "the first time in decades that the federal government has curtailed its oppressive prohibition of marijuana."

Tucked inside there also was a bill put in at the last minute and that is no secret, actually written by Citigroup to remove the limits of Dodd-Frank legislation by removing the rules of credit default swaps.

I guess the banks are so use to writing their own legislation that they did not want the law makers screwing it up so this time they actually wrote it themselves.

Liz Warren is the only Senator having enough BALLS to speak-out and is a women.

I don't get it, we have a total bank failure 70 years ago, and it took them some 4 years to get proper legislation to keep it from happening again (glass-steagle) and they take the legislation off in 1999, they call it outdated, and it only takes them 7.5 years to bring us to the same disaster again.

Let me guess, it won't happen again because they have learned their lesson and won't do anything like that again. That is what we were told in 1999 by senator Phil Graham (who's wife was on the board of Enron).

Now we let the banks write their own legislation and Pass it without debate. If it was so straight forward and good, why did they slip it in at the very last minute before passage.

The smartest guys in the room that worked at Enron, went to work at the big banks after Enron collapsed. They seem to keep their job at the banks after they bring the same good fortune to them and us because of the American taxpayer paid off their debt.

Those smartest guys in the room seem to be hell bent on bringing the U.S. economy to the same likeness as Enron where they started. They seem to be in control. They get to author their own legislation.

Prepare for a new vaporware economy.

I don't smoke pot myself, have no interest in it.... But I just don't understand why it's illegal already. Booze is legal, cigarettes are legal, why not pot?

Make it legal and then tax it.

Funny I predicted this would happen very soon about 2 weeks ago. After reading some articles about a company receiving funding for GMO based MJ I knew it wouldn't take long

Back in April or May I discussed launching some ecommerce based MJ projects with a couple of people... I should have followed up on that

Btw : Did you know that the Emancipation Proclamation did not end slavery except for in states that left the union?
All northern states remained legal to keep slaves after the EP was signed.

You didn't like donuts because there was a hole in it?

The Republican Party, also commonly called the GOP (for "Grand Old Party"), is the second oldest existing political party in the United States after its great rival, the Democratic Party. It emerged in 1854 to combat the Kansas?Nebraska Act, which threatened to extend slavery into the territories, and to promote more vigorous modernization of the economy. The Party had almost no presence in the South, but by 1858 in the North it had enlisted former Whigs and former Free Soil Democrats to form majorities in nearly every Northern state.
With its election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860, and its success in guiding the Union to victory and abolishing slavery, it came to dominate the national political scene until 1932. The Republican Party was based on northern white Protestants, businessmen, small business owners, professionals, factory workers, farmers, and African-Americans. It was pro-business, supporting banks, the gold standard, railroads, and high tariffs to protect factory workers and grow industry faster.

The Republican party responsible for those things is not the Republican party we have now. It's been taken over by nutcases and the conservative media movement, which basically started in the early 90's with Rush Limbaugh. It's not my father's Republican party...not even close.

OH, and FYI... Civil rights was signed into law by Johnson 50 years ago... a Dem. Who were you thinking?
FYI, it would have never got to Johnson if the 18 democrat senators had their way with an 54 day filibuster, then the biggest hurdle was Democrat Senator Strom Thurmond that said
This so-called Civil Rights Proposals, which the President has sent to Capitol Hill for enactment into law, are unconstitutional, unnecessary, unwise and extend beyond the realm of reason. This is the worst civil-rights package ever presented to the Congress and is reminiscent of the Reconstruction proposals and actions of the radical Republican Congress.

It was the work of GOP senators that got it to the desk of the president, by changing the bill a little and getting GOP swing voted to pass it.

Also, not only am I rational, I read before I post.

I never said they are the same, but according to how shitty the economy is, they are better.
Under Obama, Median wages have dropped over 8%

Clinton was a good President, it doesn't mean all democrat presidents are good

Reagan was a good president, doesn't mean all Republican president are good either

Last time the US was in a good place is when we had a Clinton in the oval office and a GOP controlled congress, that's why I hope Clinton runs

It's bizarre how some people still claim "Republicans" were the ones who endorsed civil rights and that the GOP is the party of Lincoln...trying to make a connection between the current conservative Republican party and the Republican party from the past. That is intellectually dishonest.

Let's just out it this way. Conservatives fought against civil rights. Progressives fought for civil rights.

Yup. That's why I pretty much don't even bother trying to have a meaningful discussion about it anymore with those who just don't get it.

When did the Republicans fight again Civil rights?
They were considered Conservative because of their views towards Business which hasn't changed.

I get what your saying, you just can't back it up.

I'm not being anyone's cheerleader here, just stating facts, but if you can't debate facts, that's ok!

I became a libertarian a little while ago, I don't care for either party

If you think comparing slavery to a doughnut made sense then the hole must be in your head.

Once again, stick to current history.
I don't care that your great great ancestor did anything, good or bad.

Republicans ran around like chickens with their heads cut off looking for fake birth certificates and that's who are now, not some shit from the past.

The reason the GOP gets no credit for it is because they were not in control of the house or senate at this time. Here are the breakdowns of the votes by party and region:

The original House version:
Southern Democrats: 7–87 (7–93%)
Southern Republicans: 0–10 (0–100%)
Northern Democrats: 145–9 (94–6%)
Northern Republicans: 138–24 (85–15%)

The Senate version:
Southern Democrats: 1–20 (5–95%) (only Ralph Yarborough of Texas voted in favor)
Southern Republicans: 0–1 (0–100%) (John Tower of Texas)
Northern Democrats: 45–1 (98–2%) (only Robert Byrd of West Virginia voted against)
Northern Republicans: 27–5 (84–16%)

It was clearly a north Vs south situation. In the end a democrat controlled house and senate passed a bill that was signed by a democrat president which means they are going to get the credit for it.

Politics is a game of what have you done for me lately. While there were some key GOP members that helped the civil rights bill get passed, right now most minorities see the republicans as the ones who want to throw them in jail and pass laws to keep them from voting.

Yes, that's true, but it was clearly filibuster that last for 54 days lead by 18 democrats and only one republican that shows something. Also what Democrat Senator Strom Thurmond said about the whole thing. Him being a member of the KKK

Keep pretending republicans are on the side of freedom, less govt, and state rights.

Hi Vendzilla,

Today's republican party is NOTHING like the old republican party. When I say that I hate republicans, I am usually talking about specific republicans. However if I am generalizing, its definitely the current batch going at least as far back as George W.

Think about it - what do current republicans really stand for? Anti-Science, Anti-Education, Anti Green energy, Anti-voting rights, Anti-Gay, Anti-Women, Anti birth control, etc.

Americans love to say "Land of the free" or however that saying goes, and for the most part Canadians and others around the world want to believe it. Americans might want to believe this but from an outsiders point of view, it doesn't seem that way anymore, thanks to far-right republicans and their tea-party brothers & sisters.

In the end the group in power almost always gets the credit and/or the blame for things.

We blame Obama for things that are wrong with the country. We don't blame the republicans that hit him with a historic number of filibusters.
