Whatever happened to Acacia?

Did Acacia just go away? They sent me a letter which I ignored and they let me be. Lightspeed was going to fight them, what came of that?

Got letter from them as well. Went straight to trashcan. Should have kept it for memories.

I scanned the letter they sent me, and have a copy somewhere. At the time, I hadn't ever put any video on the web on any of my websites, so it was obviously a total scam attempt on their part.

When they mailed me using a misspelling of my name that was only present in my Matrix Content account, I knew the source of the information, and threw it right in the trash.

I believe that the patent they were trying to enforce was ruled invalid. Farrell (Far-L) and some others fought them and won.

Acacia is still around and still a patent troll.

Thank you.

Yes, our Defense Group with VS, Lightspeed, Homegrown, and others fought them for years, got Time Warner in the mix, etc. and won outright in the end. We won and saved a lot of people from having to pay. Those that agreed to the patent still would have to pay the license. Sucks to be them since they are still paying.

Only Edgeprod would've had a legit defense by ignoring it since they didn't get his name right. Anyone else that ignored it did so at their peril and if they didn't go after you at the time then it probably meant you weren't worth the trouble.

So spare me the bravado and posturing of "I threw it in the trash and ignored it". Everyone that did that at the time was taking an enormous legal risk that could have impacted their business, especially those that used GFY as a pulpit to brag that they were ignoring a legal filing. Anyone that treats business that way is not really acting professionally.

Other patent trolls have come along but our experience with Acacia has acted as a force field from most other similar trolling Lemelson style patents. I say most, but not all; however, now we are like Vietcong in the jungle with enough AK47 ammo to make anyone think twice about getting into it with us or regret it if they do.

Our group put tied them up pretty good so they stopped going after individuals after a while, but especially when the big media giants were pulled in.

We got the letter as well. Had my first name and the wifes last name on it for some reason. So we ignored it.

Kudos

I just wrote them a letter pointing out that my company had never posted video to the web. Which was true. I did, however, buy photo content from Matrix.

Whatever happened to Matrix? I kind if miss when there were a lot of content providers with easy shopping.

Homegrown deserves a ton of credit, I know we donated to the fund to help them fight Acacia.

This industry doesn't team up often to fight a cause but this time it did and we won, thanks to Spike, Far-L and a handful of others.

thanks again guys

I figured that their patent was invalid; but glad I didn't have to make a choice like others did.

The same exact thing happened to me... with Matrix and i spelled my wrong, then rather than correcting it, i added some letters to make it sound funny (i was bored and annoyed with all the info they required)... later, i got a letter from Acacia with that spelling, making it painfully obvious how they got my name.

actually, i remember this same thing happened to quite a few people

The content pickins are so slim anymore. I miss those days too. I have soooo much matrix content.

I remember Acacia. I was so scared because of some stupid voice wavs on my websites. I'm sure they sent me something, but EscortBiz giggled and told me not to worry. So, I didn't.

We'd never bought from Matrix Content, and my business partner believed for reasons I can't remember now that Acacia got our details from either our registration one year at an AVN show, or from having our badges scanned at an AVN show. I doubted that, but who knows?

Matrix wasn't the only one to rat out all its affiliates. Those were dark times.

Some hard lessons learned. Kenny was one of the only ones that helped at the time although many claimed they did but did not. However, one company put in tons of cash but never was part of the group and never wanted any sort of credit for their contribution and that is ATK. Huge respect and thanks to Kim to this day.
