thanks Canadia! Finally a breakthrough in battery technology.

I've mentioned it here and it seems to upset some peeps but battery technology is the primary roadblock to EV. a tesla s needs 1000s of l-i computer batteries, there is nothing hi-tech about that. that's a go-around.

but things are changing:

Quote:
From an research perspective, the drive to build high-density batteries for electric vehicles is just starting. Sure, research on better batteries has been going on for years, but until the last year or two the electric-vehicle market was so small that universities, much less large battery manufacturers, didn't see it as a priority.

That's why Tesla Motors essentially stuffed a bunch of computer batteries into a car -- it was the best option available. A decade or two from now we may look back on the lithium ion-fueled Model S as a stepping stone to a more electrified world, one that is powered by the next generation of battery technology.

Research that could make lithium ion batteries obsolete
Scientists at the University of Waterloo in Ontario announced this week that they have made a breakthrough in lithium-sulfur battery technology that could increase an EVs range by 3 times with the same weight and a lower cost.

The Scientific Breakthrough That Will Completely Change The Electric Vehicle Market

it's nanotech too!

The lithium–sulfur battery is receiving intense interest because its theoretical energy density exceeds that of lithium-ion batteries at much lower cost, but practical applications are still hindered by capacity decay caused by the polysulfide shuttle. Here we report a strategy to entrap polysulfides in the cathode that relies on a chemical process, whereby a host—manganese dioxide nanosheets serve as the prototype—reacts with initially formed lithium polysulfides to form surface-bound intermediates.

I said in that other thread that charging wouldn't be an issue in 5 years. I didn't base that on any real data, just the historical perspective of technological progress. A need for better batteries was there, so that nut will get cracked soon.

So you refuse to accept that China is becoming one of the most important economy in the world....... Yet you suppose that Canada, a nation of people so laid back that they had to redefine the "reclining chair" is going to revolutionize the battery power industry?

Hmmmmm yes.... hmmm.....

Well it looks like a long way off so I wouldn't be looking to drop money on it. But I would, however, drop money on anything to do with the "graphene" they refer to in the article:

Strongest substance on earth..... stronger than steel or diamonds.

China doesn't revolutionize anything. They steal and create facades.

im sure the new york times will find a way to make the battery run out of juice on the highway so they can get a photo op & tell the public how teslas still run out of juice premature.

loloz. so you are still butthurt at me over the fact I pointed out that CHina is NOT the most important economy in the world? and you are still so butthurt over that you have to misrepresent entirely what I said and also bring it up here?

why not go outside for a walk and enjoy your day instead of trying to gotcha me over something silly from a month ago.

can you read scientific abstracts? serious question. If you can, then you will know I am not supposing anything.

Moreover, why would you denigrate Canadian research?

Battery technology will continue to evolve....I remember doing consulting for Duracall back in the early 80a The R&D dept there was hard at work on using Lithium in batteries (alkaline was all the rage at the time) but the problem they were facing...making it stable. test batteries would catch fire and even explode.

The challenge isnt so much finding new chemical elements that will make better batteries, we know what they are.....the problem is finding a way to make them stable

because pride is a weakness in many..

I could care less where any discoveries take place myself. Progress is more important than nationalism.

i dont think New York Times will spend so much time on tailing a battery that would run out on the highways. dont you think?

[T]he most important question for EV makers to answer
Electric vehicles have made huge advancements over the last five years, but they still need better batteries to go mainstream. A 50-mile range is enough to attract die-hard EV enthusiasts, but a 500-mile range would appeal to nearly everyone.

If researchers can figure out a way to pack 500 miles worth of energy into an electric vehicle, and to ensure it could be charged overnight, the industry's growth could explode....The Scientific Breakthrough That Will Completely Change The Electric Vehicle Market
300 - 350 mi range (484 - 565 km) would be enough probably to start a real momentum.

The new Chevy Bolt (GM ("Government Motors" )) has a 200 mile range now.

The only one "butt hurt" are the oil producers ...

Batteries are the hurdle that will eventually change a lot of things. Once the technology gets there we will see homes powered by localized batteries rather than power grids. That's where this is going, unless of course the power companies manage to strangle it.

It's not just EV's but homes that will be changing in the future. With that comes all the appliances and so forth..

Canada ranks very highly globally for quantity and quality of scientific research, where it isn't doing very well is converting research into marketable products/patents.
