I am guessing since they are a regulated exchange, Large and suspicious transactions will be reported to FinCEN. Also FDIC insurance.

Maybe so .gov can set up a honeypot account on Silk Road and sells drugs. Then drug buyer uses the bitcoin address from coinbase. The US will be able to go and steal any money for any account tied to that coinbase account. Since bitcoin transactions are out in the public, a money trail will be in place.

They were considered a "broker" before, and now are going to a regulated bitcoin exchange, but ya i been buying from COINBASE for a long time

They have on-site trading now. Instead of you paying them then waiting a few days for money to clear before getting your btc.

edit: Only people in these US states can use the new features though.

It wasn't crediting your account right away back then, though. Very annoying, considering all of the documents you had to provide.
